Gennesaret dodder (Cuscuta gennesaretana) is not a crop, but an invasive parasitic weed belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. It is entirely devoid of chlorophyll and roots, making it completely dependent on a host plant for its survival and growth.
The plant thrives by attaching itself to the stems of host plants and inserting specialized organs called haustoria into the host's vascular tissue. This process extracts water and essential nutrients, which severely debilitates the host plant and often leads to its death.
The species originates from the Middle East, specifically near the Sea of Galilee. It is considered a significant agricultural pest due to its ability to spread rapidly and contaminate fields, posing a major threat to both domestic food production and regional biodiversity.
Agricultural management is focused on eradication rather than cultivation. Effective control strategies involve stringent seed certification, crop rotation with non-host species, deep mechanical cultivation to bury seeds, and the application of chemical herbicides to manage local infestations.
Key threats associated with this parasite include substantial reductions in crop biomass, deterioration of product quality, and the ability of the dodder to act as a bridge for transmitting viral pathogens between various plant species in the field.
