Coconut oil

When applied, the oil forms a thin, hydrophobic film over the surfaces of insects and mites. This film clogs the spiracles, which are the breathing holes of the pests, resulting in suffocation and death.

In terms of fungicidal properties, coconut oil disrupts the cell membranes of fungal pathogens, such as powdery mildew. This prevents spores from germinating and limits the spread of the mycelium on the host tissue.

It is widely regarded as a safe alternative to synthetic pesticides. The substance biodegrades rapidly and leaves no harmful residues, making it suitable for integrated pest management and organic systems.

Furthermore, coconut oil acts as a surfactant or adjuvant, reducing the surface tension of water and allowing other active ingredients in tank mixtures to adhere better to leaf surfaces.

The primary targets for coconut oil-based treatments are soft-bodied pests, including aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites, which are common in greenhouses and open fields.

It is also effectively employed against various fungal diseases, particularly those that develop on the surface of leaves, such as powdery mildew, by creating an unfavorable environment for pathogen growth.

Standard application rates for commercial formulations range from 0.5% to 2% emulsified in water. It is crucial to ensure thorough coverage of both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.

Applications should be scheduled during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to ensure the plants do not experience oil-induced phytotoxicity under high light intensity.

The main precaution is to avoid high-temperature application. Temperatures exceeding 30°C significantly increase the risk of burning the plant foliage due to the accumulation of heat under the oil film.

Care must be taken during the flowering stage, as direct application can physically coat floral parts and potentially interfere with pollinator visits or delicate bloom development.
