Lemon essential oil is classified as a group of naturally derived biopesticides that act primarily through contact effects. The active components include terpene compounds, particularly limonene, which are capable of dissolving the chitinous layer of insects and disrupting pathogen cell membranes.

The mechanism of insecticidal action involves the physical blockage of the insect's breathing pores (tracheae), which leads to rapid death by asphyxia. Furthermore, the oil exerts a pronounced dehydrating effect by drawing moisture out of the pest's body tissues.

Against phytopathogens, the substance exhibits fungistatic properties by inhibiting fungal mycelium growth and spore germination. It compromises the integrity of fungal cell membranes, effectively preventing the further progression of infections on plant surfaces.

A key characteristic of this active ingredient is its lack of systemic action. The oil acts purely locally; therefore, achieving high biological efficacy requires thorough and complete coverage of the treated plant surfaces with the working solution.

This agent is often categorized as a contact-based product that does not typically induce resistance in harmful organisms upon regular use, making it a valuable tool in integrated pest management and anti-resistance strategies for agricultural crops.

What it targets

Lemon essential oil is effectively applied against a broad spectrum of small sucking pests, such as aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and various mite species. These insects are particularly sensitive to direct contact with the oily emulsion.

The product also demonstrates activity against powdery mildew fungi that develop on leaf surfaces. Due to its ability to suppress spore development, the oil is used to contain the spread of powdery mildew on fruit and vegetable crops.

The use of this product is highly relevant in greenhouse environments where short pre-harvest intervals are critical. It works effectively on vegetable crops, providing a rapid knockdown effect when pest populations are high.

This biopesticide is used in both industrial orchards and organic farming systems, as it degrades rapidly in the environment, leaving no toxic residues in the produce or the soil profile.

Rates and timing

Application rates vary depending on the level of crop infestation and the target pest type. Typically, the concentration of the working solution ranges from 0.5% to 2%. Precise recommendations are always provided on the label of each registered product.

Spraying should be performed at the first signs of pest or disease incidence. It is recommended to repeat treatments at 7- to 10-day intervals to cover all developmental stages of the pests, especially during periods of active reproduction.

The working solution must be freshly prepared. It is vital to ensure uniform spraying on both sides of the leaves, as the active ingredient possesses only contact action and does not penetrate into the internal plant tissues.

Application during hot weather may cause phytotoxicity (burns), so treatments should preferably be scheduled for early morning or evening hours when the ambient air temperature does not exceed 25 degrees Celsius.

Lemon essential oil is compatible with many other biological products, yet it is essential to perform a physical and chemical compatibility test for the components before preparing a tank mix.

Restrictions

The main limitation is phytotoxicity: at high concentrations or when applied under intense sunlight, the oil may cause tissue damage to leaves. It is not recommended to treat plants that are currently under water stress.

The product does not provide a long-lasting residual effect due to its high volatility. Efficacy decreases shortly after the working solution dries on the leaf surface, which necessitates repeat applications if the pest infestation resumes.

Strict adherence to safety measures is required when handling the concentrate. Despite its natural origin, essential oils can cause irritation to the mucous membranes and skin of the operator, making the use of personal protective equipment mandatory.

The product should be stored in a cool, dark place to prevent the oxidation of active terpene components, which results in a loss of biological activity and reduced effectiveness of the product.

Avoid releasing large amounts of concentrate into open water bodies or soil, despite its biodegradability, as high oil concentrations may negatively affect beneficial soil microflora if applied in localized overdoses.
