Description

Mode of action

Flupyrsulfuron-methyl belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical class. It is a systemic herbicide that is absorbed primarily by leaves and partially by the root system of weeds.

The main mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in sensitive weed species, blocking the synthesis of vital amino acids such as valine and isoleucine.

As a result of protein biosynthesis disruption, cell division in weed meristematic tissues stops within a few hours after the active substance is absorbed.

Visual symptoms of damage, such as chlorosis, necrosis, and gradual wilting, appear within 1–2 weeks after application, depending on weather conditions.

Complete weed control is achieved within 3–4 weeks. The substance shows high selectivity for cereal crops due to their ability to rapidly metabolize the herbicide.

What it targets

Products based on this active substance are designed to control a wide range of grass weeds in winter and spring wheat crops.

The primary target is loose silky-bent (Apera spica-venti), which poses a significant threat to cereal crop yields.

It also effectively suppresses the development of several other annual grass species that compete with crops for water, light, and nutrients.

The product is recommended for application at early stages of weed growth to achieve maximum herbicidal efficacy.

Rates and timing

Optimal application timing is linked to the active growth phase of the weeds, as this is when their metabolism is most susceptible to ALS inhibition.

Restrictions

Flupyrsulfuron-methyl requires careful handling. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment for skin and respiratory protection during mixing and application.

Avoid application if the crop is under stress (frost, pests, drought), as this may slow down the crop's ability to metabolize the herbicide.

Avoid spray drift onto neighboring crops, especially broad-leaved plants that may be sensitive to herbicides in this group.

Follow crop rotation guidelines, as residues of sulfonylureas in the soil can potentially affect subsequent sensitive crops in certain environments.

Disposal of product residues and rinsing water near water bodies or drinking water sources is strictly prohibited to prevent environmental contamination.
