Mode of action

Bordeaux mixture is a traditional contact fungicide consisting of a suspension of copper(II) sulfate and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). It is widely recognized for its efficacy in controlling various fungal diseases in agricultural settings.

The mode of action involves the release of copper ions upon contact with moisture on the plant surface. These ions inhibit the germination of fungal spores and prevent the development of mycelium, effectively shielding plant tissues from infection.

As a surface-active fungicide, it does not penetrate the plant. Therefore, complete coverage of the plant surface is crucial for maintaining an effective protective barrier against incoming fungal pathogens.

The protective effect typically lasts for 7 to 14 days, depending on rainfall intensity and plant growth rate. Frequent reapplication may be necessary during rainy seasons as the film can be gradually washed off.

Bordeaux mixture is categorized as a classical inorganic fungicide. Despite the development of modern chemistry, it remains a standard preventative measure in orchards and vineyard management worldwide.

What it targets

This fungicide is primarily used to control fungal diseases such as scab on pome fruits, various leaf spots, and blights. It is also effective against several bacterial diseases that affect leaves and fruits.

It is extensively used in the cultivation of grapes, potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit trees. It serves as an essential tool for managing outbreaks of downy mildew and other foliage-infecting pathogens.

The substance is primarily used in a preventative manner. It helps significantly reduce the initial inoculum load in the field if applied at the correct stages of plant development.

Rates and timing

Application rates are typically adjusted according to the concentration of the solution, usually 1% or 3%. A 3% solution is reserved for dormant season applications, as it can be phytotoxic to green, actively growing tissue.

For active vegetation, a 1% mixture is standard. Proper preparation is essential: the copper sulfate solution must be added to the milk of lime, never the other way around, to ensure a neutral pH balance.

Timing is critical, with applications often scheduled before expected infection periods or based on phenological stages of the host plant. Preventive spraying is the most reliable strategy for disease control.

Pre-harvest intervals (PHI) usually range from 15 to 30 days. This period ensures that the copper residues on the harvestable parts of the plants are reduced to safe levels by the time of collection.

Application volume should be calculated to achieve uniform wetting without excessive runoff. The mixture must be applied immediately after preparation to maintain its chemical stability and efficacy.

Restrictions

The main limitation is its potential for phytotoxicity, especially if the mixture is acidic. Testing the pH of the mixture using litmus paper is a mandatory step before any field application.

Bordeaux mixture is generally incompatible with most modern pesticides. It should not be mixed with soaps, detergents, or products sensitive to alkaline conditions, as it can cause significant chemical instability.

Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, and respiratory masks, to prevent inhalation or skin exposure to the copper-based chemicals.

Applications during bloom are strictly prohibited to protect pollinators. Additionally, spraying under high-temperature conditions can exacerbate the risk of leaf burn and other phytotoxic symptoms.

Environmental safety requires careful handling to prevent runoff into aquatic ecosystems, as copper is highly toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Proper waste management is mandatory.
