Mode of action
Straight-chain lepidopteran pheromones are synthetic analogs of natural sex pheromones used for integrated pest management. Chemically, these compounds contain a straight carbon chain with an aldehyde functional group as the primary active site.
The mode of action is based on mating disruption. By releasing synthetic pheromones into the air, the communication channel between male and female moths is blocked, preventing the males from locating the females.
This biological intervention keeps the female population unmated, significantly reducing the production of fertile eggs and the subsequent development of crop-damaging larvae in the next generations.
These pheromones are highly specific to particular species, ensuring that beneficial insects and pollinators remain unaffected, which makes them an ideal component of sustainable agricultural systems.
The controlled-release technology, typically implemented via polymer dispensers, ensures a steady concentration of the pheromone in the field throughout the entire period of adult moth activity.

The longevity of the dispensers is typically sufficient for the entire growing season, spanning several months. This reduces the need for repeated field entries and mechanical operations.
Monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment involves using additional tracking traps. A near-total absence of male catches in these traps indicates that the mating disruption is functioning correctly.
When pest pressure is exceptionally high, pheromones are often used in combination with other pest management strategies to provide a comprehensive protection layer for the crop.
Restrictions
Large-scale application is recommended for success. Small or fragmented fields are prone to the influx of mated females from neighboring untreated areas, which can compromise control efforts.
These substances do not act as knockdown insecticides and have no effect on larvae or eggs already present on the plants. Their purpose is preventative rather than curative.
Storage must be in cool, airtight containers to prevent loss of potency through evaporation. Proper disposal of used dispensers at the end of the season is required according to local regulations.
Safety precautions involve wearing gloves during installation to prevent pheromone contamination on clothing or skin, which could potentially attract insects to the user.
It is important to ensure proper spacing of dispensers based on manufacturer guidelines, as inadequate distribution will create "gaps" in the pheromone plume, allowing successful mating.
