Mode of action
n-Tetradecyl acetate belongs to the group of SCLP acetates (Straight-Chain Lepidopteran Pheromone acetates), which are key components of the pheromone systems of many insect species. This substance is not a classic toxic insecticide but acts as an attractant.
The mechanism of action is based on mimicking the natural sex pheromones of female insects. Males, detecting the specific scent of this compound, are guided to the source, where traps with adhesive coatings or other fixation methods are installed.
A second important application is the mating disruption method. A high concentration of the substance in the air makes it impossible for the male to find the female, which disrupts the mating cycle and leads to a decrease in the pest population's fertility.
The SCLP acetate group combines biologically active esters characterized by high volatility and specificity for target species. Their structure allows for fine-tuning monitoring systems for specific agroecosystems.
The use of such compounds helps reduce the chemical load on the ecosystem, as they are targeted strictly at specific organisms, without harming beneficial entomophages and without polluting the soil with toxic residues.
What it targets
This component is actively used to control Lepidoptera populations, including various species of cutworms, leafrollers, and moths. It is an essential tool for monitoring species that damage vegetable, fruit, and cereal crops.
The application spectrum includes combating pests such as:

- Various species of fruit worms
- Leaf-eating Lepidoptera in greenhouse and open field conditions
The substance is effective in intensive fruit growing, where precise determination of the pest's flight initiation is required for subsequent insecticide application.
The use of pheromone systems based on acetates allows for the detection of hidden threats at early stages, before pest populations reach the economic injury level.
Rates and timing
Application rates of n-Tetradecyl acetate vary depending on the delivery form: dispensers, lures, or vials for pheromone traps. Usually, 1–2 dispensers per hectare are sufficient for monitoring purposes.
Application timing is strictly tied to the pest's phenology. Monitoring systems should be installed 5–7 days before the expected start of adult flight, based on multi-year observation data.
The exposure duration for one dispenser ranges from 30 to 60 days. After this period, the evaporation efficiency of the active ingredient decreases, requiring mandatory replacement of consumables.
When using the mating disruption method, the application rate per hectare is significantly higher, as a high background concentration of the substance must be created across the entire field or orchard area.
To achieve a stable result, meteorological conditions must be considered: at high temperatures, the evaporation rate increases, which may require adjusting the frequency of dispenser replacement.
Restrictions
The primary limitation is the high specificity of the substance. n-Tetradecyl acetate is ineffective against pests whose pheromone system does not contain this component or has a different chemical composition.
The substance is sensitive to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall or gale-force winds, which can reduce the pheromone concentration in the air layer near the ground.
Contact between dispensers and chemical pesticides must be avoided, as foreign odors can repel insects and render the trap ineffective.
Storage of the product requires strict adherence to temperature regimes (preferably in a refrigerator), as premature evaporation of the active substance occurs at room temperature.
Standard safety measures apply: prevent contact with mucous membranes, wear gloves when installing dispensers, and avoid storage near food products.
