Description
Mode of action
Yucca schidigera extract contains natural steroid saponins that function as powerful surface-active agents (surfactants). The primary mechanism involves lowering the surface tension of the spray solution.
Due to its unique molecular structure, the extract significantly improves the wetting and spreading of droplets on leaf surfaces, especially on those with waxy cuticles or heavy hair coverage. This maximizes the contact area between the active ingredient and the target.
Beyond its adjuvant properties, the extract exhibits direct fungicidal and insecticidal activity. It disrupts the cuticle of soft-bodied insects and the cell membranes of pathogens, leading to their rapid desiccation and mortality.
It acts as a natural emulsifier, ensuring the stability of tank mixes. This prevents component separation and sedimentation, resulting in uniform application across the entire field.
Yucca extract is an environmentally friendly, biodegradable compound. It shows excellent safety profiles, causing no phytotoxicity even at higher dosages, making it a staple in organic and integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
What it targets
The extract is used to manage various fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, gray mold, and different types of leaf spots by destabilizing the structural integrity of fungal cell walls.
As an insecticidal tool, it is highly effective against soft-bodied pests, including aphids, thrips, spider mites, and whiteflies. Saponins damage the protective outer layers of these insects, leading to fatal dehydration.
It serves as an essential adjuvant for herbicides and fungicides applied to hard-to-wet crops like cabbage, onions, and various fruit trees, significantly enhancing the uptake of the pesticides.
The extract also shows potential in managing soil-borne nematodes through irrigation systems or fertigation, suppressing larvae development and soil activity.
Rates and timing
Application rates vary depending on the intended purpose: for use as a wetting agent, standard rates range from 50 to 200 ml per 100 liters of spray solution.
When used for insecticidal control, concentrations may need adjustment based on pest density and crop stage; small-scale trial applications are recommended before full-field use.
Water quality should be considered; while Yucca extract is tolerant to moderate water hardness, it performs most efficiently in slightly acidic to neutral pH conditions.
Applications are best scheduled for early morning or evening hours to minimize solar degradation and allow maximum absorption of the active components by plant tissues.
Restrictions
Mixing with highly alkaline pesticides is generally discouraged, as a high pH environment can lead to the degradation of saponin molecules, reducing overall product efficacy.
Although the product is naturally derived, standard protective equipment should be used when handling concentrated stocks to prevent skin or eye irritation.
Proper storage is essential; the product should be kept in a cool, dark place within the temperature range of 5 to 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its biological potency.
