Terbumeton
Description
Mode of action
Terbumeton belongs to the chemical class of triazines (methylthio-1,3,5-triazines). It is a systemic herbicide that is primarily absorbed by the root system of weeds from the soil solution.
The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of photosynthesis. The active ingredient blocks electron transport in photosystem II, leading to the disruption of energy metabolism within the weed cells.
As a result of interrupted photosynthetic processes, the plant ceases the synthesis of essential organic compounds. This causes gradual chlorosis, yellowing, and the eventual death of the unwanted vegetation.
The product provides significant residual soil activity by creating a chemical barrier in the top layer of the soil. This ensures long-term protection of crops against the germination of new weed seeds over an extended period.
The efficacy of the substance in the soil is highly dependent on soil moisture and organic matter content. Under conditions of adequate moisture, terbumeton penetrates the root zone of target plants more effectively.
What it targets
Terbumeton is used for controlling a wide spectrum of annual broad-leaved and some grass weeds. It is particularly effective during the early stages of weed seed germination.
The substance effectively suppresses weed species such as common lambsquarters, pigweed, knotweed, and certain types of cruciferous weeds. The spectrum of action covers most weeds that compete with crops during the early vegetative stage.
The herbicide is utilized on crops tolerant to triazines or in tank mixtures where it serves as a component to enhance overall herbicidal effectiveness.
Applying terbumeton helps significantly reduce field weediness during critical growth phases, promoting better root system development in the main crop and increasing potential yields.
- Chenopodium album (Common lambsquarters)
- Amaranthus spp. (Pigweed)
- Polygonum spp. (Knotweed)
- Cruciferous weed species
Rates and timing
Application rates of terbumeton vary depending on soil type, weed infestation levels, and the specific agricultural crop. Typically, the product is applied before or after planting, but before crop emergence.
Heavy soils with high humus content require higher herbicide dosages because soil particles actively adsorb the active ingredient, reducing its concentration in the soil solution.
Timing of application is strictly linked to agrotechnical cycles. The optimal time is during periods of sufficient soil moisture, which is necessary to activate the herbicidal effect and move the substance into the root zone.
When used in tank mixtures, terbumeton rates can be adjusted downward. This approach allows for reduced pesticide pressure on the soil while broadening the spectrum of controlled weeds.
Precise application regulations must always comply with the official label of the specific product registered for use in the respective region.
Restrictions
A primary limitation when working with terbumeton is crop rotation adherence. Due to its relatively long half-life in the soil, triazine-sensitive crops may be damaged if planted in the subsequent season.
Applying the product to very light, sandy soils with low organic matter is not recommended, as there is a risk of leaching the active substance into deeper soil layers, potentially harming the crop.
Safety measures include the use of personal protective equipment for operators, such as respirators, gloves, and protective clothing. The product is hazardous if it comes into contact with skin, mucous membranes, or respiratory tracts.
Strictly avoid spray drift onto adjacent fields containing sensitive crops, especially during windy weather or when using fine-droplet spray technology.
Storage must be carried out in specialized warehouse facilities in compliance with temperature requirements, away from food, animal feed, and open water sources.
