Serricornin is a synthetic sex pheromone specifically designed to mimic the natural chemical signal released by female tobacco beetles. It functions as a powerful attractant that targets male beetles during their active mating phase.

The mode of action is purely behavioral; the pheromone binds to specialized sensory receptors on the antennae of the male, triggering an innate search and pursuit instinct. This guides the males directly toward the pheromone source.

By effectively drawing males into monitoring traps, the concentration of the pheromone helps in significantly reducing the mating success within a storage facility. This contributes to a gradual decline in the pest population over time.

Unlike traditional neurotoxic insecticides, serricornin poses no risk of chemical residue on stored goods. It is a highly specific tool that does not interfere with the natural ecosystem or harm non-target beneficial insect species.

The stability and volatility of serricornin molecules ensure that a steady release rate is maintained within dispensers. This consistency is vital for creating a reliable pheromone plume that remains effective for several weeks.

The primary target for serricornin is the cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), a major economic pest affecting a wide array of stored products worldwide.

The pheromone specifically targets the adult male stage of the beetle. Controlling the male population is a proactive strategy that prevents the fertilization of females and subsequent egg-laying.

It is predominantly used in warehouses storing tobacco products, dried fruits, spices, cocoa beans, cereals, and animal feed. These environments are highly susceptible to rapid infestations of this beetle.

In addition to monitoring, serricornin is used in mass-trapping campaigns to suppress active infestations in areas where traditional fumigation may be restricted or undesirable.

During a mass-trapping operation, the number of units is increased to create overlapping pheromone plumes, maximizing the chances of attracting and capturing as many males as possible.

Monitoring should be continuous, especially in warehouses with a high turnover of goods, to detect and respond to new pest introductions immediately upon arrival.

Serricornin is an environmentally benign substance. However, it must be stored in its original sealed packaging at low temperatures to prevent premature evaporation and degradation before field use.

The primary limiting factor is the presence of physical barriers or excessive air circulation that might disperse the pheromone too quickly. Strategic trap placement is essential for success.

Since the pheromone does not affect the larval stage, it cannot serve as a standalone solution for deep-seated infestations. It must be integrated with regular inventory checks and strict sanitation practices.

It is important to avoid contaminating clothing or storage tools with the pheromone, as this can lead to the accidental attraction of beetles to clean areas where they would otherwise not be present.
