Pythium oligandrum strain B301

Description

Mode of action

Pythium oligandrum strain B301 is an active component of biological fungicides, classified as a specialized mycoparasite. Unlike pathogenic species of the same genus, this strain acts as a predator that targets other fungi within the soil and on plant surfaces.

The mechanism of action relies on direct parasitism. The B301 hyphae detect the pathogen's mycelium, coil around it, and degrade the cell walls using specific enzymes such as cellulases and glucanases.

A key feature of this biocontrol agent is its ability to stimulate the plant's natural defense mechanisms. By inducing systemic acquired resistance, it significantly improves the plant's immune status against subsequent infections.

This strain effectively colonizes the rhizosphere, creating a protective barrier that prevents harmful microorganisms from infecting the roots. This provides a long-lasting protective effect throughout the plant's growing season.

The product represents an eco-friendly solution for integrated pest management systems. It does not accumulate in agricultural produce and poses no threat to beneficial soil fauna, such as entomophages or earthworms.

What it targets

Strain B301 is highly effective against a wide range of soil-borne pathogens that cause root and crown rot. Its targets include pathogens from the Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, and Sclerotinia genera.

This biofungicide is successfully used to control damping-off, gray mold, and various wilt diseases on vegetable and ornamental crops. It prevents seedling loss during critical early growth stages.

Using B301 is particularly valuable when dealing with pathogens that have developed resistance to synthetic chemical fungicides. This mycoparasite helps break the life cycles of persistent soil-borne fungal infections.

The product is highly suitable for greenhouse environments where maintaining a safe, non-toxic space for seedlings is essential. It helps keep disease pressure well below the economic threshold.

The effectiveness depends on the initial concentration of viable oospores in the formulation. Regular application contributes to the development of a suppressive soil microbiome, promoting long-term soil health.

Rates and timing

Application rates depend on the method of delivery: seed treatment, soil drenching for seedlings, or soil incorporation. It is critical to strictly follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions for each specific application type.

The timing of application should coincide with key phenological stages of the crop. Maximum efficacy is achieved when used preventively, before the onset of visual disease symptoms.

Successful colonization requires proper soil moisture. The mycoparasite needs sufficient humidity to germinate its hyphae and actively spread throughout the root zone of the host plants.

When planning application rates, consider the substrate characteristics, particularly pH and organic matter content. Significant deviations from optimal conditions may slow down the agent's development and activity.

Application frequency varies based on environmental conditions. In high-pressure growth cycles, repeated applications may be necessary to maintain a sufficient population density of the mycoparasite in the soil.

Restrictions

A major limitation is the strict incompatibility with systemic chemical fungicides. Applying synthetic chemicals shortly after B301 treatment can cause the mortality of the beneficial mycoparasite.

The product is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, surface or foliar applications should be scheduled for the evening or during cloudy weather to prevent damage to the living organisms.

Proper storage conditions are critical for maintaining oospore viability. Exposure to extreme temperatures during transport or storage can result in a loss of efficacy before the product is even applied.

Do not combine the product with aggressive soil disinfectants or sterilants. Such substances disrupt the ecosystem, preventing the B301 strain from establishing itself and colonizing the roots effectively.

While the product is safe for human use, standard personal protective equipment (PPE) remains a requirement for handling any agricultural input to ensure general workplace safety and hygiene.
