Prometryn
Description
Mode of action
Prometryn belongs to the chemical class of sym-triazines. It is a systemic, selective herbicide that is absorbed by both seedlings and the root system of weeds during the germination process.
The mechanism of action of this substance is based on the inhibition of photosynthesis in weed cells. Prometryn blocks electron transport, which leads to metabolic disruption and the subsequent death of unwanted vegetation.
The active substance creates a protective layer in the topsoil, which maintains its activity for a long period. This ensures effective control of the second wave of weeds.
The product works most effectively under conditions of sufficient soil moisture. In low-moisture conditions, its effectiveness may decrease, requiring mandatory incorporation or precipitation after application.
Prometryn has minimal toxic effects on crops, as these plants are able to neutralize the substance during their own metabolic processes, converting it into inactive forms.
What it targets
Prometryn is used to control a wide range of annual broad-leaved and some grass weeds. It demonstrates high effectiveness against species that are difficult to manage through mechanical cultivation.
The list of the most sensitive weed species includes:
- Amaranthus species
- Chenopodium album
- Sinapis arvensis
- Capsella bursa-pastoris
- Matricaria inodora
The product effectively suppresses the development of millet-like weed species during the early stages of growth. However, it is less effective against perennial weeds with well-developed root systems.
Using this herbicide significantly reduces competitive pressure on agricultural crops during the critical vegetation period. This allows plants to develop faster and form a full-fledged yield.
It is important to consider the weed composition in the field before application to choose the correct dosage. In cases where resistant species predominate, combination with other herbicides is recommended.
Rates and timing
Prometryn application rates depend directly on soil type and humus content. For light soils, minimum dosages are used, while rates are increased for heavy and high-humus soils.
Typically, the product is applied pre-emergence of the crop. For sunflower, carrots, and potatoes, the standard rate ranges from 2 to 4 liters of product per hectare, depending on the active ingredient concentration.
To prepare the working solution, clean water must be used, and the mixture should be thoroughly stirred. The volume of spray liquid varies from 200 to 400 liters per hectare to ensure uniform coverage of the soil surface.
When applying, it is important to avoid overlaps and misses, as this reduces protection efficiency. The spraying equipment must be properly calibrated to ensure precise dosage across the entire area.
Application timing is strictly regulated: post-emergence application can cause phytotoxicity, so the primary stage is pre-sowing application or soil treatment immediately after sowing.
Restrictions
Prometryn is not recommended for use on light sandy soils with very low humus content due to the high risk of the active substance leaching into the root zone of the crop.
The use of the product should be avoided in fields with high groundwater levels if there is a risk of waterlogging. This can provoke growth inhibition in the cultivated plants.
Crop rotation must take into account the residual effect of the herbicide. Although Prometryn degrades in the soil within the vegetation period, restrictions for sensitive crops may occur in the following year under unfavorable conditions.
Personal protective equipment must be worn when working with the substance. Prometryn is moderately hazardous to bees and aquatic organisms, so sanitary buffer zones near water bodies and apiaries should be respected.
Treatment during strong winds is prohibited to avoid drift onto adjacent fields with sensitive crops. After finishing work, equipment must be thoroughly cleaned with special detergent solutions.
