Primisulfuron
Description
Mode of action
Primisulfuron belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical class. It is a systemic active ingredient that is absorbed by plants primarily through the leaves and, to a lesser extent, through the root system.
The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. Inhibiting this enzyme stops cell division and halts the growth of susceptible weed species almost immediately.
Following application, weed growth ceases, though visible symptoms such as chlorosis and necrosis typically appear after a few days. Complete weed mortality occurs within one to three weeks depending on environmental conditions.
Primisulfuron-based products exhibit high selectivity, allowing them to be safely used in crops that possess the biological capability to rapidly metabolize the compound into inactive substances.
Due to its systemic properties, the substance translocates rapidly via the xylem and phloem to reach the growing points, ensuring control not only of the above-ground biomass but also of the extensive root systems of perennial weeds.
What it targets
This herbicide is primarily designed to protect maize crops from a broad spectrum of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds, as well as several grass weed species.
It effectively controls difficult-to-manage weeds such as quackgrass, thistle species, pigweed, common lambsquarters, and common ragweed, which significantly compete with the main crop for resources.
The application of primisulfuron is most justified in fields with heavy infestations of perennial root-propagating weeds, against which other herbicide classes may prove less effective.
The activity spectrum covers many weed species resistant to hormonal-type herbicides, making primisulfuron an essential component of integrated weed management in intensive agriculture.
It is important to consider that effectiveness against grass weeds may vary depending on the growth stage and specific species composition, leading to the frequent use of tank mixes to broaden the spectrum of control.
Rates and timing
Application rates for primisulfuron depend on the weed pressure, species composition, and the growth stage of the weeds. Generally, treatments are performed at the early growth stages, typically between 2 and 6 leaves.
To achieve maximum efficacy against perennial weeds like quackgrass, it is crucial to spray when they reach a height of 10–15 cm, as this corresponds to the period of intensive nutrient transport toward the root system.
Strict adherence to the manufacturer's dosage recommendations is necessary, as overdosing can result in temporary growth stunting of the maize crop.
Application is recommended under favorable environmental conditions: air temperatures between +15°C and +25°C and adequate soil moisture to ensure active weed metabolism.
When using tank mixtures, one should always verify the physical and chemical compatibility of the components to prevent precipitation or reduced herbicidal efficacy.
Restrictions
Primisulfuron possesses residual soil activity, which must be factored into crop rotation planning. Planting sensitive crops like sugar beets or legumes in the following season is generally discouraged without deep tillage.
Application should be avoided if the crop is under stress due to frost, drought, or pest and disease pressure, as these factors reduce the rate of herbicide metabolism within the plant.
Spraying during high-wind conditions is strictly prohibited to prevent drift onto adjacent fields containing sensitive crops or garden plants.
Compliance with preparation protocols for the spray solution is vital, ensuring thorough agitation and proper nozzle calibration to achieve uniform leaf coverage.
When handling the product, personal protective equipment including protective coveralls, respirators, goggles, and gloves must be used to prevent dermal or ocular exposure to the concentrated substance.
