Metamifop

Description

Mode of action

Metamifop is a highly selective systemic herbicide belonging to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate class, commonly utilized as a powerful graminicide in modern agriculture.

The core mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), which is essential for the biosynthesis of fatty acids in susceptible weeds.

Once absorbed through the leaves, the active ingredient translocates throughout the plant's vascular system, accumulating in the meristematic tissues and growth points.

By blocking lipid synthesis, the herbicide effectively shuts down the plant's metabolic functions, leading to growth cessation within hours after application.

Complete necrosis of the weed plant, including the root system, typically occurs within one to three weeks, depending on the environmental conditions.

What it targets

Metamifop is primarily used for the control of a wide range of annual and perennial grass weeds in broad-leaved crops.

  • Wild oat (Avena fatua)
  • Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli)
  • Green foxtail (Setaria viridis)
  • Quackgrass (Elymus repens)
  • Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense)

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the stage of weed growth and the overall density of infestation within the field.

For optimal results, applications should be timed during the early stages of growth, typically when target grass weeds have 2 to 4 leaves.

Higher application rates may be required for mature perennial grasses or under adverse conditions where plant metabolic rates are slower.

The use of appropriate adjuvants is often recommended to improve coverage, leaf penetration, and the overall consistency of weed control.

Weather conditions significantly impact efficacy, so application should be avoided during periods of extreme heat, cold, or imminent rainfall.

Restrictions

Strict safety precautions must be followed during application to prevent drift, as the herbicide is highly effective against non-target graminaceous crops.

Do not apply the product to crops currently under abiotic or biotic stress, as this can reduce efficacy and increase the risk of phytotoxicity.

Tank mixing requires careful planning; always perform a compatibility test before mixing metamifop with other insecticides or fungicides.

Proper cleaning of spray equipment is mandatory to prevent cross-contamination, especially if the sprayer is subsequently used for broad-leaved crops.

Operators must wear personal protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and respirators, to minimize dermal and inhalation exposure.
