Fenuron

Fenuron

Description

Mode of action

Fenuron belongs to the chemical class of phenylurea derivatives. It acts as a selective and total herbicide that is primarily absorbed by the root system of plants from the soil solution.

The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of photosynthesis. Once inside the plant, fenuron molecules block electron transport within photosystem II.

As a result of disrupting the light-dependent phase of photosynthesis, the synthesis of carbohydrates and proteins within weed cells is halted. This leads to the gradual suppression of vital processes and subsequent weed death.

The substance is characterized by moderate persistence in the soil, allowing it to affect germinating weed seeds for a certain period after application.

The efficacy of fenuron depends directly on soil moisture, as water is necessary to transport the active substance into the root zone of the weeds.

What it targets

Fenuron is used to control a wide spectrum of annual broad-leaved weeds and certain grass species.

Formulations based on this active ingredient effectively suppress weed growth in agricultural crops as well as on non-agricultural lands.

It is often used to combat resistant weed species that demonstrate tolerance to other herbicide groups.

Under field conditions, fenuron destroys weeds during their germination phase and early development stages, making it crucial to apply before or immediately after emergence.

The list of sensitive species includes both common field weeds and certain types of woody and shrub vegetation when higher application rates are used.

Rates and timing

The application rates for fenuron depend on soil type, weed pressure, and the specific crop requiring protection.

On light sandy soils, dosages are typically lower because the substance reaches the roots faster and exhibits higher biological activity.

On heavy clay soils or areas with high organic matter content, higher application rates are required to achieve the necessary herbicidal effect.

It is recommended to apply the product during periods of active weed growth when the soil moisture is sufficient for effective absorption.

It is essential to strictly follow the usage regulations specified by the manufacturer of the specific product to avoid phytotoxicity to the target crop.

Restrictions

When handling fenuron, it is necessary to follow standard safety measures: use protective clothing, gloves, and respirators to prevent contact with skin and the respiratory tract.

Drift of the working solution onto neighboring agricultural lands is strictly prohibited, as the product has high biological activity against a wide range of plants.

Pre-harvest intervals and crop rotation restrictions must be considered, as residual amounts of fenuron can affect subsequent plantings.

Storage should be carried out in dry, cool warehouse facilities, protected from direct sunlight and kept out of the reach of unauthorized persons.

Disposal of containers and product residues must be conducted according to current legislation regarding the handling of agrochemicals to protect the environment.
