For monitoring purposes, a low density of traps is required. In contrast, mating disruption requires a grid-like distribution of dispensers across the entire field or orchard to maintain a consistent concentration of the active ingredient.

Dispensers should be deployed shortly before the expected emergence of the first generation of adults to ensure the pest population is controlled from the beginning of the season.

The replacement cycle of the lures must be strictly followed, as their effectiveness decreases due to the depletion of the active chemical components over time.

Regular maintenance of monitoring traps, including the removal of debris and trapped insects, is essential to ensure they remain attractive throughout the monitoring period.

Restrictions

Strong winds can disperse the pheromone concentration, significantly reducing the efficiency of the mating disruption strategy and the accuracy of monitoring traps.

Proper storage is critical; dispensers should be kept in airtight containers away from direct sunlight and heat to prevent premature evaporation of the active pheromone.

Personnel handling the dispensers must use protective gloves to prevent contamination of clothing or equipment, as even minute amounts of transferred pheromone can reduce trap efficacy.

Pheromone lures should not be viewed as a complete replacement for insecticide applications in cases where population densities already exceed thresholds for immediate crop damage.

Successful management relies on the uniform application of the lures; neglecting small or isolated parts of the field can result in breeding reservoirs that undermine the whole program.
