Elemental Iron

Description

Mode of action

Elemental iron (in the form of finely dispersed powder) belongs to the group of specific molluscicides. Unlike metaldehyde, which affects the nervous system of mollusks, iron disrupts physiological processes in their digestive system.

After the pest ingests the bait pellets, the substance enters the gastrointestinal tract. Oxidation of elemental iron occurs there, leading to the cessation of feeding and the rapid death of the mollusk.

An important aspect is the selectivity of the action: these preparations are practically non-toxic to earthworms, bees, birds, and domestic animals when application guidelines are followed.

In the soil, elemental iron gradually oxidizes into compounds that serve as bioavailable forms of the micronutrient for plants, making it an environmentally safe component.

The mechanism of action does not induce resistance in pest populations, allowing it to be effectively used in integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

What it targets

Preparations based on elemental iron are aimed at controlling slugs and snails that damage the vegetative parts of cultivated plants.

Pests consume the bait pellets, which prevents massive destruction of young crops, seedlings, and fruits lying on the soil surface.

Rates and timing

The application rate depends on the level of infestation and typically ranges from 5 to 7 kg per hectare for a single application.

Pellets should be scattered evenly over the soil surface between plant rows, taking care to avoid contact with the crops themselves.

The best results are achieved when applied in the evening or early morning, when mollusk activity is at its peak.

If necessary, the treatment can be repeated if a high level of damage persists, but the restrictions on the number of applications per season must be followed.

The preparations show high resistance to precipitation, but in case of heavy rains, the protective effect may decrease due to washing away or degradation of the pellets.

Restrictions

The preparations should be stored in their original packaging away from children and food, despite their relative safety for warm-blooded animals.

It is prohibited to apply the product directly to harvested crops intended for consumption to avoid mechanical residues of the pellets on the fruit.

Combined use with other chemical agents is not recommended unless specified by the manufacturer's regulations.

Observe the pre-harvest intervals established for specific vegetable or berry crops before proceeding with the harvest.

Limit use in water protection zones, despite the minimal risk of contamination, to exclude any negative impact on aquatic life.
