Chitosan oligosaccharide + oligogalacturonide

Description

Mode of action

This group of substances comprises natural biopolymers that function as potent elicitors. When applied to plants, they are identified by specific receptors as signaling molecules that trigger rapid defense responses within the plant organism.

The core mechanism is the induction of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR), which prompts the plant to synthesize phytoalexins. These natural antimicrobial compounds effectively inhibit the growth of various fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Furthermore, these substances facilitate the reinforcement of plant cell walls by promoting the synthesis of lignin and callose. This structural modification provides a physical barrier that prevents pathogen invasion.

Oligosaccharides significantly enhance stress tolerance by aiding in the regulation of osmotic pressure. This helps crops withstand abiotic stress factors such as drought, extreme temperature fluctuations, and soil salinity.

Finally, they act as metabolic activators, improving the efficiency of nutrient uptake and stimulating the photosynthetic activity of crops, which contributes to overall vigor and yield quality.

What it targets

The substances are widely used as biofungicides and bactericides, targeting common diseases such as powdery mildew, late blight, fusarium root rot, and various leaf spot pathogens.

They are particularly effective in protected and open-field vegetable cultivation, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes, where minimizing chemical residues is a primary objective.

These products are also used in viticulture and orchard management to provide a protective shield against pathogens like downy mildew and scab during the critical development stages.

In cereal and industrial crop farming, seed treatment with these oligosaccharides helps protect young seedlings from early-season soil-borne infections and enhances uniform germination.

Beyond fungal diseases, the group has shown efficacy in suppressing certain nematode populations by creating an unfavorable rhizosphere environment for their reproduction.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the specific formulation and the target crop's developmental stage. Seed treatments typically require precise lower dosages to maximize growth stimulation.

For foliar applications, a standard interval of 10 to 14 days is recommended to maintain the induced resistance status of the crop throughout its vegetative growth period.

When applied via fertigation or drip irrigation, the concentration should be calculated based on the substrate type and the severity of the pathogen pressure in the rhizosphere.

Applications should ideally be performed during early morning or late evening hours. This avoids high-intensity UV light, which can degrade the bioactive molecules before they are absorbed.

These products are typically non-toxic and biodegradable, allowing for harvest shortly after application without the need for long pre-harvest intervals.

Restrictions

Avoid mixing these substances with strongly alkaline agents or heavy oxidizing compounds, as such environments can rapidly degrade the organic oligosaccharide structures.

Effectiveness may be diminished under extreme cold conditions when the plant's metabolic activity is reduced, preventing a timely response to the applied signaling molecules.

In cases of severe epidemic outbreaks, these products should not be used as a standalone solution but rather as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program alongside traditional fungicides.

Proper storage is essential; the products should be kept in cool, dark environments to prevent the degradation of enzymes and bioactive components within the complex.

Individuals with known allergies to shellfish-derived products should handle chitosan-based formulations with caution, using appropriate personal protective equipment during mixing and application.
