Mode of action
Cinnamomum cassia oil, derived from the bark of the Chinese cinnamon tree, is a potent botanical active ingredient used in plant protection. It is classified as a bio-pesticide due to its natural origin and ability to control various plant stressors.
The primary mode of action is attributed to cinnamaldehyde, which interferes with the cellular integrity of target pathogens. By disrupting the cell membrane of fungi, the oil causes leakage of intracellular components, leading to rapid cell death.
Against insects and mites, the oil functions as a contact-based toxicant. It degrades the outer protective layer of the pest's cuticle, leading to severe dehydration and disruption of their respiratory systems, which prevents further feeding and reproduction.
This substance is characterized by its high volatility and rapid degradation in the field, ensuring it leaves no harmful residues on crops. It is widely accepted in organic farming systems as a safe alternative to persistent synthetic compounds.
The multi-target action of cinnamon oil makes it a valuable tool for resistance management. Because it attacks multiple physiological pathways simultaneously, pathogens and pests are less likely to develop resistance to it compared to single-site synthetic products.
What it targets
Cinnamomum cassia oil is highly effective against a variety of fungal pathogens. It is specifically used to manage powdery mildew, Botrytis, late blight, and several types of soil-borne rots that threaten vegetable and fruit production.
In terms of insect control, the oil is effective against soft-bodied pests such as spider mites, thrips, whiteflies, and aphids. It is particularly useful in greenhouse environments where these pests thrive and require frequent management.
Furthermore, the oil serves as a repellent, making plant surfaces less palatable for chewing insects. This reduces the overall damage to crops and limits the spread of secondary viral infections transmitted by vectors.

Rates and timing
Application rates vary based on the specific crop and the severity of the infestation. Typically, aqueous emulsions with concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% are prepared for foliar spraying to achieve complete coverage.
Applications should be timed with the initial onset of disease symptoms or pest activity. In greenhouse settings, preventative application cycles of 7 to 14 days are recommended to maintain consistent control of the pathogen load.
For optimal efficacy, spray equipment must be calibrated to ensure fine droplet distribution. As the oil acts on contact, coverage of all plant surfaces, particularly the underside of leaves, is essential for success.
Restrictions
The oil exhibits phytotoxicity if applied at excessively high concentrations or under stressed environmental conditions. Testing on a small number of plants is advised to determine the tolerance of specific varieties to the formulation.
Application during peak midday temperatures should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch and to minimize the rapid volatilization of the active ingredient. Applying during cooler periods of the day ensures better performance.
Due to its intense aroma, caution is required when applying close to the harvest period. Growers should strictly follow the pre-harvest interval (PHI) to avoid any potential impact on the organoleptic quality of the final produce.
