Cafenstrole
Active ingredient

Cafenstrole

Description

Mode of action

Cafenstrole belongs to the triazole-pyrimidine chemical class and acts as a selective herbicide for soil application. Its primary mechanism of action targets the inhibition of meristematic tissue growth in susceptible plants.

The active ingredient suppresses the synthesis of the acetolactate synthase enzyme, which blocks the formation of essential branched-chain amino acids such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine.

The herbicide is rapidly absorbed by the root system of germinating weeds, leading to the cessation of cell division and subsequent death before or shortly after emergence.

Due to its high systemic activity, cafenstrole is effectively distributed throughout the plant tissues, providing a long-lasting protective effect for the cultivated crop.

The substance is characterized by relative soil stability, which allows it to form a reliable herbicidal shield during the early stages of vegetation.

What it targets

Cafenstrole is primarily used to control annual grass and broad-leaved weeds in rice crops, especially when the crop is grown in flooded paddies.

The main weed species susceptible to this herbicide include:

  • Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyard grass)
  • Scirpus species
  • Cyperus difformis
  • Various monocot and dicot weed species infesting rice fields

The product's effectiveness against a wide spectrum of weeds allows for a significant reduction in competitive pressure on rice crops during critical development stages.

The application of this substance is justified when long-term control of hard-to-eradicate weeds is required in irrigated farming conditions.

An important advantage is its selectivity, which allows the agent to be applied without damaging the crop plants when the regulations are followed.

Rates and timing

Cafenstrole application rates vary depending on soil type, field weed infestation levels, and the specific formulation used in the agrotechnological cycle.

Usually, the application is carried out early after sowing or during weed emergence, when they are in the active germination phase or producing their first true leaves.

To achieve maximum effectiveness in rice paddies, it is necessary to ensure an even distribution of the working solution across the water surface of the check.

When used in tank mixtures with other herbicides, cafenstrole dosage rates may be adjusted to broaden the spectrum of action against weeds.

Agronomists recommend strictly adhering to the recommended temperature regime, as sudden fluctuations can affect the degradation rate of the substance in the soil.

Restrictions

When working with cafenstrole, it is necessary to strictly observe personal protective measures that exclude contact of the concentrate with skin, mucous membranes, or airways.

Discharging pesticide residues or rinse water into water bodies and irrigation systems used for fisheries is prohibited due to potential toxicity to aquatic organisms.

It is not recommended to use the product on soils with low humus content and high permeability to eliminate the risk of active ingredient migration into groundwater.

It is important to observe the waiting periods before allowing workers to enter fields for mechanized or manual operations after pesticide application.

Storage of the product must be carried out in specialized warehouses away from food products, animal feed, and areas accessible to unauthorized persons.
