How to identify

The Temnocerus is a genus of small weevils belonging to the Attelabidae family within the Coleoptera order. These beetles are characterized by their elongated snouts, which they use to bore into plant tissues during the construction of their unique leaf rolls.

Adult beetles typically display a metallic sheen, with colors ranging from deep blue to greenish-black. Measuring only 3–5 millimeters in length, these insects are easily overlooked until the damage becomes significant.

The larvae are legless, white to yellowish grubs with a distinct brown head. They live and feed inside the rolled leaves, which act as protective cases against predators and adverse environmental conditions.

The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter, emerging in early spring as soon as tree buds begin to swell.

Females exhibit specialized behavior by cutting leaf petioles and rolling the leaf blade into tight, cigarette-like structures. Eggs are laid inside these structures, providing the developing larvae with a moist, nutrient-rich environment.

What it damages

Temnocerus weevils primarily infest trees of the Rosaceae family. They are known to cause damage to apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees, often targeting the most vigorous new growth.

Young leaves and developing shoots are the main targets. Persistent damage reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which can stunt overall growth, especially in young or nursery-stage plants.

In cases of high infestation, the weevils may also feed on flower buds and young fruitlets. This results in premature fruit drop and significant economic losses in terms of potential harvest volume.

The rolled leaves eventually wither and die, creating necrotic sites that are highly susceptible to secondary fungal infections, further damaging the tree's canopy health.

Cumulative damage over several seasons can severely weaken the tree, making it more vulnerable to other stressors such as drought, frost, or secondary pests.

Signs of infestation

The most recognizable sign is the presence of tightly rolled leaves, often described as «leaf cigars», hanging from the tips of branches or lying on the ground under the canopy.

Close inspection of the foliage often reveals small, irregular holes or «windows» in the leaf blades caused by adult feeding before the rolling process begins.

When disturbed, adult beetles have a defensive reflex: they drop from the leaves and feign death on the ground, making them difficult to spot during routine garden inspections.

A high density of withered, rolled-up foliage in June is a clear indicator of a severe infestation that requires immediate intervention to protect the rest of the growing season.

Observation of the soil surface beneath the trees can reveal fallen rolls, which often contain larvae or pupae. These should be cleared away as part of sanitation efforts.

Control measures

Mechanical control is the first line of defense; gathering and disposing of rolled leaves effectively kills the larvae inside before they can pupate or emerge as adults.

Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the period of adult emergence. Insecticide applications are most effective when performed shortly after the trees finish blooming.

  • Application of systemic or contact insecticides targeting active adults.
  • Use of biological insecticides based on entomopathogenic fungi or bacteria.
  • Fall cultivation of the soil around the base of trees to expose and kill overwintering pupae.

To maximize efficacy, apply treatments during the cooler parts of the day when beetles are less active and more likely to remain on the foliage to ingest the product.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including monitoring with pheromone or sticky traps, allow growers to determine the exact timing for control measures, minimizing the use of broad-spectrum chemicals.
