The spotted weevil (Paroplapoderus pardalis) belongs to the family Attelabidae, commonly known as leaf-rolling weevils. These insects are characterized by a prominent rostrum and a distinct body shape that helps them manipulate plant foliage.

Adult beetles feature a recognizable spotted pattern on their elytra, providing effective camouflage against bark and leaves. They are relatively small but possess strong mandibles for feeding and structural manipulation of leaves.

The biological cycle follows complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The interaction between the female and the host plant is highly specialized, involving the precise rolling of leaves.

Larvae are typically white or yellowish with a curved, fleshy body. They reside within the protective environment of the leaf rolls, consuming the inner tissues while remaining shielded from predators.

What it damages

When it appears

Overwintered adults emerge in early spring, synchronized with the onset of bud break and the emergence of fresh foliage. This is the period when they begin their initial feeding and reproductive activities.

Late spring and early summer mark the peak of the damage cycle. Females are actively engaged in rolling leaves and laying eggs, which typically lasts until the early summer period.

Larval development takes several weeks, during which they feed within the leaf rolls. Upon maturation, the larvae exit the rolls and descend into the soil to undergo pupation.

The second generation of adults emerges during mid-to-late summer. These beetles engage in further feeding on remaining foliage before preparing for winter hibernation in protected sites.

The speed of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature. Warmer climates allow for faster larval development, potentially increasing the total number of individuals in the population.

Signs of infestation

The most diagnostic sign is the presence of neatly rolled leaf structures, often referred to as "leaf cigars," dangling from branches or scattered on the ground beneath the tree canopy.

Foliage inspection reveals irregular holes and scalloped leaf edges. These patterns are characteristic of adult feeding, which often occurs before the more severe leaf-rolling damage becomes widespread.

Wilting of terminal shoots and yellowing of the rolled leaf portions are clear indicators of structural damage caused by the weevil's intervention with the plant's vascular system.

Adult weevils themselves can be spotted resting on the underside of leaves or on stems, particularly during warm, sunny weather when they are most active.

For smaller orchards, manual collection of beetles in the early morning hours—when they are sluggish—is a viable and chemical-free method to reduce adult pressure on budding trees.

Chemical control should be reserved for high-infestation levels. Selective use of insecticides during pre-flowering and post-flowering stages can protect the foliage while minimizing impact on pollinators.

Encouraging natural predators such as insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps helps maintain a biological balance. Consistent plant care ensures trees maintain sufficient vigor to recover from minor pest damage.
