How to identify

The genus Paracentrocorynus belongs to the leaf-rolling weevil family (Attelabidae) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are characterized by an elongated rostrum and a firm, often metallic-colored exoskeleton.

Adult beetles possess a specialized snout that allows them to puncture plant tissues and precisely roll leaves into protective structures. Their size is relatively small, but their distinct behavior makes them recognizable in orchards and forests.

The larvae are typically legless, cream-colored, and curved in an arc. They live exclusively inside rolled leaves, which provide both a controlled microclimate and a consistent food source throughout their developmental stages.

Taxonomically, identifying these weevils requires close examination of specific morphological features, such as the pronotum shape and genitalia, as they often resemble other members of the Attelabidae family.

During the day, adults are active on the surface of leaves. However, they are highly sensitive to disturbances; when threatened, they perform a death-feigning act, falling from the tree to the ground to avoid capture.

What it damages

This pest affects a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs. It is particularly harmful to young nursery stock and ornamental plants, where leaf damage ruins the aesthetic value and stresses the plant.

The primary damage is caused by females, which make strategic incisions on leaf petioles during oviposition. This causes the affected leaves to wilt and drop prematurely, disrupting the plant's normal growth cycle.

Inside the rolled leaves, larvae feed on the parenchyma. This activity destroys the leaf's structure and impairs photosynthesis, turning the leaf into a dry, hollowed-out tube that serves as a breeding ground for secondary infections.

Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which weakens the tree's health. This makes the host plant more susceptible to cold winters, fungal pathogens, and attacks from other opportunistic pests.

The cumulative effect of these injuries over the growing season causes stunted shoot growth. In severe cases, the tree’s overall vitality is compromised, leading to long-term decline if not managed effectively.

When it appears

The lifecycle begins in the spring, triggered by rising temperatures. Adult weevils emerge from their overwintering sites in the soil and immediately start feeding on young buds and newly sprouted leaves.

The mating and oviposition period usually occurs between late spring and early summer. During this time, females are most active in rolling leaves, creating the characteristic structures used to house their offspring.

Larval development takes place throughout the summer. The speed of growth is highly dependent on ambient temperatures; warmer conditions typically accelerate the cycle, while cool weather may slow it down.

Pupation generally occurs in the soil beneath the host plant. After finishing their development in the leaf roll, the larvae drop to the ground to burrow, where they transition into the pupal stage.

As autumn approaches, the activity of the new generation wanes. Adults enter a period of dormancy, retreating into the upper soil layer or leaf litter to survive the winter months until the next season.

Signs of infestation

The most visible indicator of infestation is the presence of neatly rolled leaves that look like cigars. These structures are scattered throughout the tree canopy and are easily detected upon inspection.

Small, sharp incisions on the leaf petioles are a clear sign of the weevil's activity. These cuts cause the leaves to hang limply, often resulting in them falling to the ground before they completely wither.

The leaf surface often features small holes and streaks where adult weevils have been feeding. In these areas, the plant tissue eventually necrotizes, resulting in a characteristic "shot-hole" appearance on the foliage.

Underneath the canopy, the accumulation of fallen, rolled leaves in mid-summer confirms that the larvae have completed their feeding and have dropped to the ground to pupate.

Persistent damage leads to an uneven, ragged appearance of the tree canopy. In ornamental gardens, this visual decline is often the first reason gardeners notice that their plants are being attacked.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most effective cultural control measure. Collecting and destroying fallen, rolled leaves prevents the larvae from reaching the soil and completing their life cycle, thus reducing next year's population.

For smaller plants, manual shaking of branches over a cloth or white paper is highly effective during cool morning hours when the beetles are less active and prone to dropping.

Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi or bacteria is an environmentally friendly option. These agents can suppress beetle populations without harming beneficial pollinators or predatory insects.

Chemical intervention should be reserved for outbreaks. Systemic insecticides are generally preferred as they travel through the plant tissue to reach the hidden larvae inside the rolled leaves.

  • Tilling the soil under trees in late autumn to expose pupae to frost.
  • Using sticky traps on trunks to monitor and capture migrating adults.
  • Pruning heavily infested branches to reduce the immediate larval load.
