How to identify

The Bukarka weevil (Lasiorhynchites caeruleus) is a small beetle belonging to the Attelabidae family within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by a metallic blue-green coloration and measure approximately 2.5–3 millimeters in length.

The insect possesses a distinctive elongated snout (rostrum), which is typical for weevils. Its body is covered with sparse, light-colored hairs that give it a slightly dull appearance under direct sunlight.

The larvae of the Bukarka are legless, cream-white in color with a brown head, and exhibit a curved, C-shaped body posture. They spend the majority of their development cycle within fallen leaves before moving into the soil.

Sexual maturation occurs in early spring as temperatures rise above 10 degrees Celsius. This warming period signals the beetles to emerge from their overwintering sites to begin feeding and mating.

The eggs are small, oval, and yellowish. Females deposit them individually into tunnels bored into the leaf petioles, which they then partially sever to create ideal conditions for the emerging larvae.

What it damages

The Bukarka weevil primarily affects fruit-bearing trees, including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot. The pest causes damage to both young seedlings and mature orchard trees.

Adult beetles feed on swelling buds, drilling deep holes that often cause the buds to die, resulting in a significant reduction in the tree's blossom potential and subsequent fruit yield.

The most severe damage occurs during the fruit set stage when females lay eggs in the peduncles. By girdling the fruit stalk, they cause the young fruit to drop prematurely, potentially leading to major losses.

After hatching, the larvae feed on the leaf tissue, skeletonizing the leaves from the inside. This activity impairs the tree's photosynthesis, reducing the accumulation of carbohydrates needed for winter dormancy.

Extensive infestations can leave a tree significantly weakened, making it more susceptible to environmental stress, winter damage, and secondary infections from other pests or diseases.

When it appears

Adult activity typically begins in early spring, coinciding with the "pink bud" stage or the initial leaf expansion phase of the host trees. The beetles move from the soil into the canopy to feed.

The peak mating and egg-laying period generally occurs from mid-May through early June. During this time, the beetles are most active in the upper branches of the trees.

The larval development cycle completes in mid-summer, after which the larvae descend into the soil to pupate. Pupation usually takes place at a depth of 5 to 10 centimeters.

New adults emerge late in the summer, but many remain within the soil, utilizing it as a refuge to overwinter successfully until the following spring season.

Winter dormancy is spent primarily in the soil under the tree canopy or within dense leaf litter, making the pest resilient to cold temperatures and difficult to eradicate completely.

Signs of infestation

Early symptoms of an infestation include small punctures on tree buds, often accompanied by droplets of sap. Shortly after, one can observe multiple small holes on young leaves caused by adult feeding.

A reliable indicator of Bukarka presence is the sudden and widespread premature dropping of young fruit in late spring. Examination of the peduncles on fallen fruit will reveal the characteristic egg-laying wounds.

Wilted, browning, and prematurely falling leaves in late May and June indicate that females have utilized the petioles for egg deposition, causing the leaf to die due to disrupted nutrient flow.

Upon closer inspection of the leaves, one can see a net-like pattern of veins, which is the result of skeletonization performed by the larvae during their early development stages.

Visual identification can be confirmed by placing a white sheet under the branches and gently shaking them in the early morning; the beetles often exhibit "thanatosis," or feigning death, and fall onto the sheet.

Control measures

Cultural control measures include regular cultivation and tilling of the soil under the tree canopy during the summer months. This disrupts the pupation process and kills larvae hidden in the earth.

Sanitation is crucial; the prompt collection and destruction of fallen leaves and dropped fruit are essential to break the pest's lifecycle and prevent the larvae from completing their development.

Chemical control involves the application of registered insecticides during the pre-blossom and post-blossom stages. Careful timing is key to hitting the adults before they can lay eggs.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the use of pheromone traps or biological predators, can help maintain population levels below the economic threshold without harming beneficial insects.

  • Hand-shaking branches to collect and destroy adult beetles.
  • Removing all organic debris from the orchard floor in late autumn.
  • Applying sticky bands on tree trunks to deter beetle migration.
