How to identify

The Gold-headed weevil (Cyllorhynchites auricapillus) belongs to the family Rhynchitidae, order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are small, typically ranging from 3 to 5 mm, and possess a metallic golden-green or copper sheen.

A distinctive morphological feature is the elongated rostrum (snout), which the insect uses to feed on plant tissues and to drill holes for oviposition in developing fruit.

The body of the beetle is covered in fine, short hairs, contributing to its somewhat matte appearance when viewed under magnification. Larvae are legless, C-shaped, and feature a hardened, dark-colored head capsule.

Adult beetles are known for their defensive behavior of playing dead (thanatosis) when disturbed, dropping from the canopy to the ground to hide among leaf litter.

What it damages

Early morning visual inspections of the orchard can reveal adults resting on the leaves or stems, particularly on the sunny sides of the trees.

Cultural control is a primary management strategy, involving the regular collection and disposal of fallen fruit to interrupt the larval lifecycle and prevent further development.
