How to identify

The poplar leaf-rolling weevil (Byctiscus populi) is a beetle belonging to the Attelabidae family. Adults typically measure between 6 and 8 mm in length and feature a vibrant metallic green, blue, or bronze coloration, making them noticeable on foliage.

Female weevils are known for their distinct behavior of rolling leaves into tight, cylindrical structures often referred to as "cigars." These rolls serve as protective chambers where the females deposit their eggs, ensuring the larvae have a safe environment for development.

The larvae are legless, C-shaped grubs with a pale body and a prominent brown head. They feed exclusively on the tissues within these leaf rolls, which provides them with both food and protection from the elements and predators.

The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. It typically overwinters as an adult in the soil or under leaf litter, allowing the species to survive harsh winter temperatures.

Sexual dimorphism is present, with males often possessing specialized thoracic spines that are absent in females, which is a key identifying trait during the reproductive season.

What it damages
