How to identify
The leaf-rolling weevil (genus Byctiscus) belongs to the Attelabidae family of beetles. These are small insects, typically 5–10 mm long, known for their metallic, often iridescent green or blue coloration.
A distinctive feature of these weevils is their elongated rostrum (snout), which females use to manipulate leaves, folding them into complex, cigar-shaped structures for their eggs.
The larvae are typically legless, cream-colored, and curved, with a hardened, yellowish head capsule. They spend their entire developmental phase shielded within the rolled leaf structures.
Adult beetles are robust and tend to be active during the day, although they are highly evasive and will drop to the ground when disturbed, often playing dead.
The lifecycle involves overwintering as adults in soil or leaf litter, emerging in spring to feed on fresh buds and foliage, which triggers the onset of the reproductive phase.
What it damages
These weevils are notorious pests for various fruit trees, including grapes, apples, pears, plums, and cherries. They also affect certain ornamental and forest trees like birch and linden.
Damage is caused by both adults and larvae. Adults feed on young buds, leaves, and tender shoots, often skeletonizing the leaf tissue or creating irregular holes.
Larvae consume the inner tissues of the rolled leaves, causing the foliage to wither, brown, and eventually drop prematurely from the host plant.
Fruit set can also be compromised; weevils may sever the stems of developing fruits, leading to premature fruit drop and significant reduction in crop yield.
In cases of severe infestation, the cumulative stress on the tree due to defoliation and tissue loss can inhibit growth and weaken the tree’s overall vitality.
Signs of infestation
The most recognizable sign is the presence of tightly rolled, cigar-shaped leaves hanging from the branches or found on the ground beneath the tree canopy.
Foliage damage appears as irregular holes and notched edges on leaves. In severe cases, large portions of the leaf blade may be completely eaten away, leaving only the veins.
Withering of young shoots and blossoms often indicates that the weevils have been feeding on the delicate tissues near the base of the stems.
A sudden, unexplained drop of immature fruit during the early summer months is frequently associated with adult feeding activity on fruit stems.
Physical inspection of the leaves usually reveals the presence of larvae inside the rolled structures, accompanied by frass (insect excrement), which confirms active infestation.
Control measures
Manual collection and destruction of the rolled-leaf 'cigars' is the most effective organic control method. This must be done regularly before larvae pupate in the soil.
Cultivating the soil around the base of trees in the fall helps to disturb overwintering sites, exposing pupae and adults to frost and natural predators.
Early morning shaking of trees over a sheet or cloth is a practical way to capture adults, as they are less active in cooler temperatures and drop readily upon impact.
Targeted application of insecticides may be necessary during the post-bloom period if monitoring shows that the infestation exceeds the economic threshold for your crop.
Maintaining orchard hygiene, including the removal of dead leaves and organic debris, significantly reduces the survival rate of the weevil population throughout the winter.
