How to identify
The apple fruit weevil (lat. Auletes cupreus) is a small snout beetle approximately 2.5–3 mm in length. The body is characterized by a metallic blue-green or coppery luster.
The beetle possesses a well-developed snout, which is almost equal in length to the rest of its body. Females are generally larger and more robust than males, though their appearance is otherwise similar.
The larva is legless, curved, and creamy-white in color with a brown head. It resides deep within plant tissues, making it difficult to spot without close inspection.
Adult beetles are elusive and tend to stay within the thick parts of the tree canopy. When disturbed, they often feign death and drop to the ground.
The eggs are small, oval, and milky-white. Females typically lay them singly into small cavities bored into young shoots or leaf petioles.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets pome and stone fruit trees, including apples, pears, quinces, plums, and cherries, causing significant damage during the growing season.
In early spring, adult weevils feed on buds by boring deep holes into them, which often leads to the death of the buds before they even have a chance to bloom.
The larvae are particularly destructive, as they burrow into young shoots, leaf stems, and fruitlets, causing them to deform, wither, and eventually drop off.
Affected shoots turn black, curl, and dry out, leading to premature leaf drop and weakening the overall health of the host tree.
High populations of this pest can cause substantial yield losses and hinder the proper growth and development of young nursery trees.
When it appears
The life cycle begins in early spring when temperatures consistently exceed 10–12 degrees Celsius, prompting adult beetles to emerge from their overwintering sites in the soil.
The mating and egg-laying period usually coincides with the bud break and early flowering stages of fruit trees.
During the summer months, the larvae develop inside the plant tissues where they feed, eventually exiting to pupate in the soil.
Pupation occurs at a shallow depth within the soil during mid-to-late summer. The new generation of adults remains in the soil through the winter.
The apple fruit weevil completes only one generation per year, but its early emergence makes it a significant threat to fruit set and early vegetative growth.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation in spring is the presence of small puncture wounds on unopened buds, which subsequently turn brown and die.
A classic symptom is the wilting and blackening of shoot tips in early summer, which is often misidentified as a fungal disease like fire blight or moniliosis.
The twisting and browning of leaf petioles indicate that a larva is feeding inside, disrupting the nutrient supply to the leaf.
Inspecting the soil under the canopy may reveal dropped fruitlets featuring distinct exit holes, which the larvae create when leaving to pupate.

Control measures
Effective management begins with cultural practices, such as the regular removal and destruction of infested shoots to eliminate larvae.
Cultivating the soil around the base of the trees during autumn or early spring helps disrupt the overwintering pupae and reduces the next season's population.
If population levels exceed economic thresholds, contact or systemic insecticides can be applied during the bud-burst period to protect the developing buds.
Mechanical control, such as shaking the beetles off branches onto a tarp in the early morning, is a practical method for smaller or organic gardens.
The use of pheromone traps is recommended to monitor beetle activity, allowing for timely intervention before large-scale egg-laying occurs.
