How to identify
Pistachio thrips (Liothrips pistaciae) belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Phlaeothripidae. It is a tiny insect with an elongated body, typically measuring 2–3 millimeters in length.
Adults are dark brown or black, making them visible against the light green color of young shoots. Larvae are usually lighter, appearing yellowish-orange or reddish in color.
The wings of the imago are transparent with a characteristic fringe of hair, common to this order. Their piercing-sucking mouthparts allow them to efficiently feed on plant cell sap.
The life cycle includes several stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. There are also resting stages that occur in the soil or under bark crevices, which complicates their detection.
This pest leads a secretive lifestyle, preferring to inhabit terminal buds and tender leaves, where a favorable microclimate for reproduction and feeding is maintained.
What it damages
The primary host for this species is the true pistachio (Pistacia vera). The pest affects both commercial orchards and wild-growing pistachio trees within their natural range.
Thrips feed on young leaves, inflorescences, and developing fruits by extracting sap from plant tissues. This process disrupts normal metabolism and inhibits the growth of vegetative mass.
Significant economic damage occurs in commercial orchards, where infestation of inflorescences leads to mass fruit drop and a potential yield reduction of 30–50%.
Damaged plant tissues become entry points for secondary infections, including fungal diseases, which further weaken the trees.
During massive outbreaks, fruit deformation is observed, significantly reducing market quality and suitability for commercial processing.
When it appears
The activity of pistachio thrips is closely linked to temperature and the phenological stages of the pistachio tree. Emergence from overwintering sites begins in early spring when mean daily temperatures exceed 12–15 degrees Celsius.
Peak concentration of the pest on trees is noted during the period of intensive shoot growth and blooming, when plant tissues are most succulent and nutritious.
Several generations develop throughout the growing season. The rate of generation turnover depends on humidity and temperature fluctuations in the specific region.
By mid-summer, under high temperatures and dry air conditions, the activity of some populations may decrease, although irrigation in intensive orchards can sustain their reproduction.
The shift to overwintering sites begins in autumn as temperatures drop, with insects seeking shelter in bark cracks, plant debris, or topsoil layers.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation is curling and deformation of young leaves at the tips of shoots. Small light spots appear at puncture sites, which darken over time.
Upon closer inspection of the leaf undersides, one can find black excrement, as well as adult insects and larvae.
Damaged inflorescences gradually turn yellow, wither, and drop off before full fruit development can occur. This leads to sparse fruit clusters on the pistachio tree.
Necrotic spots may appear on the fruits, and the skin can take on a cork-like texture. The tree generally appears stunted, shoot growth slows, leading to gradual canopy degradation.

Control measures
Agronomic control methods include regular sanitary pruning of infested shoots, where pest populations are concentrated. It is mandatory to dispose of prunings away from the orchard.

Biological control involves the use of natural enemies such as predatory mites, lacewings, and anthocorid bugs, whose populations should be conserved within the agroecosystem.
Chemical control should be implemented during critical pest development phases, such as pre-bloom and post-bloom. Systemic or contact-stomach insecticides are commonly applied.
Rotating products from different chemical groups is essential to prevent the development of resistance within the thrips population, while strictly adhering to dosage guidelines and pre-harvest intervals.
