How to identify

The Schefflera thrips (Liothrips heptapleuri) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. These are tiny, slender insects, typically measuring 2–3 mm in length as adults, with a dark brown to black coloration.

Unlike some other thrips species, the Schefflera thrips tends to congregate in the developing tissues of the host plant. They have a lifecycle consisting of egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages.

The larvae are generally paler than the adults, appearing yellowish or whitish. Because of their small size and cryptic nature, they are often difficult to detect until the plant starts showing visible signs of stress.

These insects are highly host-specific, primarily targeting plants in the Araliaceae family, with a strong preference for Schefflera species commonly used in horticulture.

Identification is best achieved by inspecting the apical buds and the undersides of young leaves, where the population density is typically highest throughout the growing season.

What it damages

The primary damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on the cell sap of young, succulent leaf tissues. This feeding behavior causes direct cellular destruction and systemic stress to the plant.

Affected leaves often show signs of severe malformation, becoming curled, wrinkled, or stunted. This damage significantly reduces the ornamental value of the plant and hinders normal foliage development.

Feeding sites often develop necrotic spots or a characteristic silvery appearance, which is a result of cell collapse and air intake into the damaged epidermal tissue.

Severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop and the death of young shoots, causing the entire plant to lose vigor and eventually decline if left untreated.

Furthermore, these insects may act as vectors for various plant pathogens, potentially introducing diseases through the lesions created during their feeding process.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of an infestation is the presence of small, dark fecal spots left by the insects on the surface of the developing leaves.

Deformed and curled leaf growth is a major indicator. As the thrips feed on the delicate tissues of new leaves, they restrict normal expansion, resulting in distorted leaf shapes.

Discoloration, specifically silvery or greyish patches on the leaf surface, indicates where the thrips have extracted cell contents, leaving behind empty cellular structures.

The presence of shed larval skins (exuviae) on the leaves or stems is a clear indication that a reproductive population of thrips is currently active on the plant.

A general stagnation in growth, accompanied by darkened or shriveled tips on new branches, suggests that the infestation has reached a critical level requiring intervention.

Control measures

Management begins with strict quarantine measures. Isolate any infested Schefflera from other indoor or greenhouse plants to prevent the spread of these highly mobile insects.

Mechanical control includes pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves, followed by a thorough wash of the foliage with a pressurized spray of water to remove larvae.

Chemical control is often necessary for effective eradication. Systemic insecticides are generally preferred as they are absorbed by the plant and kill the thrips as they feed on the sap.

  • Apply insecticides according to the label, ensuring thorough coverage of all leaf surfaces.
  • Repeat treatments at 7–10 day intervals to target newly hatched generations.
  • Use yellow sticky traps near the plants to monitor adult populations and reduce their numbers.

Cultural practices, such as maintaining optimal plant health and managing humidity, can make the plant less susceptible to severe infestations, although chemical intervention is usually required to eliminate the pest entirely.
