How to identify

Kurdjumov's thrips (Haplothrips kurdjumovi) is a small insect species belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. Adult insects are typically 1.5 to 2 mm in length.

The adult form is characterized by a dark brown or black body with long, fringed wings. Their body structure is elongated and flattened, which is an adaptation for hiding in narrow spaces, such as the glumes of cereal ears.

The life cycle involves several developmental stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. Larvae are distinct from adults, usually displaying a bright yellow or reddish-orange color.

This species is well-documented in agricultural entomology as a significant pest of various grain crops. Its taxonomic classification places it within a group known for causing damage to cereal inflorescences.

Identification is primarily performed by examining the ears of cereal crops, where the insects tend to aggregate. The presence of a tube-like segment at the end of the abdomen is a key morphological feature for identification.

What it damages

Kurdjumov's thrips primarily infest small grain cereals, including winter and spring wheat, barley, and rye. They can also survive on various wild grasses found in field margins and surroundings.

Both adult thrips and their larvae damage the plant by piercing the tissues and sucking out cell sap. They concentrate their feeding on the developing grains during the milky to dough stages.

The damage results in a loss of grain mass and quality. In severe infestations, the nutritional value of the grain is reduced, which significantly impacts the commercial grade of the harvested wheat.

In addition to direct physiological damage, the insects contribute to the spread of fungal pathogens. Their excrement contaminates the ear, which promotes the growth of mold and other secondary infections.

Grain shrinkage and deformation are common symptoms of high infestation levels. These physical defects lead to lower test weights and reduced milling quality, creating substantial economic losses for farmers.

When it appears

The pest overwinters primarily in the adult stage. Suitable overwintering sites include plant debris, stubble, bark crevices, or the upper layers of soil in and around the cereal fields.

Activity resumes in early spring once average daily air temperatures rise above 10-12 degrees Celsius. Adults then migrate to emerging cereal crops to begin feeding and reproduction.

The peak population development occurs during the heading and flowering stages of cereal crops. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season depending on temperature and moisture levels.

Climate conditions significantly influence the population dynamics of this thrips species. Warm and humid weather is generally favorable for rapid population growth and spread across the field.

As the harvest approaches and temperatures drop, adults search for shelter. Efficient field management practices during post-harvest can effectively limit the number of insects surviving through the winter.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the visual detection of the insects inside the ear. Opening the glumes usually reveals the presence of both adults and larvae.

Larvae can be easily identified by their bright reddish-orange appearance. Large numbers of these larvae clustered together are a strong indicator of an active and growing population on the crop.

White ear appearance (whitehead) can be an indirect symptom. However, since this may also be caused by other factors, field scouts must confirm the presence of thrips before concluding the cause.

The presence of black, tiny fecal spots on the glumes indicates that the infestation has been ongoing for some time. This contamination often ruins the appearance and quality of the wheat ear.

Malformed, shriveled, or dented kernels are definitive signs of feeding damage. These grains often have small cavities or discoloration, indicating that the sap was extracted during the grain-filling phase.

Control measures

  • Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
  • Effective tillage practices, including stubble plowing, to bury and destroy overwintering sites.
  • Strict management of weeds, especially wild grasses, in surrounding areas.
  • Regular field scouting and monitoring using yellow sticky traps or visual inspection of ears.
  • Timely application of systemic insecticides during the stem elongation or heading phases if thresholds are exceeded.
