Trichostrongylus colubriformis

Adult worms measure approximately 4 to 8 mm in length. Due to their small size and pale color, they are extremely difficult to identify during field inspections without specialized laboratory diagnostic techniques.

The life cycle is direct, meaning the parasite does not require an intermediate host. Eggs are shed in feces onto pasture, where they hatch and develop into infective third-stage (L3) larvae under favorable moisture and temperature conditions.

Once developed, these L3 larvae migrate onto blades of grass, where they are ingested by grazing animals, thus completing the transmission cycle and starting a new infection in the host's intestinal tract.

The survival rate of larvae in the environment is highly dependent on humidity, as desiccation quickly kills them; however, they can persist for several weeks or months in cool, moist soil conditions.

This nematode causes significant pathology by burrowing into the mucosal lining of the small intestine, specifically the duodenum and jejunum, leading to severe inflammation.

The mechanical damage to the intestinal villi prevents efficient nutrient absorption, leading to malnutrition, stunted growth, and a marked reduction in weight gain among the affected animals.
