These insects have a flattened body and a head that is characteristically wider than their thorax. They possess powerful mandibles adapted for chewing, which they use to graze on skin debris, hair, and epidermal secretions.
Their life cycle consists of incomplete metamorphosis. The female attaches her eggs, known as nits, to the hair shafts of the host using a durable cement, ensuring the eggs remain in place until hatching.
Nymphs resemble smaller versions of the adults and mature through several stages of molting. The entire life cycle occurs on the host, as these parasites cannot survive for long periods in the external environment.
Because they are host-specific, Trichodectes species are often identified by the type of mammal they infest. Their survival depends entirely on the microclimate maintained within the animal's fur.
Although chewing lice do not consume blood, they are considered significant pests due to the constant irritation they cause to the host's skin. The grazing activity of the lice leads to severe itching and distress.
Infestations are particularly damaging to cattle, horses, and small companions. The persistent scratching and rubbing against fences or feeders lead to hair loss, skin inflammation, and open wounds.

Visually, the coat appears unkempt, dry, and matted. Areas with high parasite activity often show patches of hair loss (alopecia) and the presence of dandruff-like scales on the skin surface.
Close inspection of the hair base, especially in the neck, rump, and tail areas, often reveals the presence of small, whitish eggs firmly cemented to the individual hair shafts.
In cases of heavy infestation, the animal may display signs of nervous exhaustion and irritability. The constant physical disturbance prevents the animal from sleeping or eating normally.
Secondary signs include crusts, scabs, and areas of raw, inflamed skin due to self-trauma. In severe cases, the animal may appear listless and lose its condition, reflecting the chronic nature of the infestation.
Effective control of chewing lice requires the use of veterinary-approved insecticides. These are available in various forms, including topical spot-on treatments, sprays, shampoos, and dusting powders.
Treatment must be comprehensive, involving all animals within a group to eliminate the reservoir of the parasite. A follow-up application is usually necessary to target nymphs that emerge from eggs that survived the initial treatment.
Environmental sanitation is a critical component of successful eradication. This includes thorough cleaning and disinfection of stalls, bedding, and grooming equipment to remove any lice that may have fallen off the host.
