Adult insects are small and often go unnoticed due to their dark coloration, which blends perfectly with the bark of willow trees. Their short antennae are a distinctive feature used in entomological identification.

The larval stage, often referred to as false caterpillars, is the period when they are most active. These larvae typically exhibit green or grayish hues, allowing them to remain hidden among the leaves of their host plant.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. They typically overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter, encased in protective cocoons, emerging in spring as the tree foliage develops.

Their life cycle is highly synchronized with the host plant, ensuring that larvae emerge precisely when the fresh, nutritious leaves of the willow are available for feeding.

This pest feeds exclusively on willow species. The damage is primarily caused by larvae, which have a voracious appetite for leaf tissue, leading to significant defoliation in severe cases.

Young trees in nurseries are particularly vulnerable to infestation, where leaf loss can stunt growth and overall vigor. Mature trees can also suffer if populations become dense and persistent over several seasons.

Beyond direct foliage loss, feeding activity stresses the tree, making it more susceptible to opportunistic fungal infections and secondary pest attacks. This can significantly reduce the tree's lifespan and health.

In ornamental garden settings, the aesthetic impact is severe. A willow tree stripped of its leaves loses its characteristic beauty and shade-providing capacity, turning into a liability rather than a feature.

Commercial willow growers face economic losses due to decreased biomass production. Damage to the foliage inhibits the plant's ability to produce the energy required for wood and shoot development.

The most common sign of an infestation is the presence of holes or missing leaf margins. Larvae typically feed from the edge of the leaf toward the midrib, often leaving a skeletonized appearance.

The accumulation of frass (larval waste) on the leaves or beneath the tree canopy is a clear indicator of a feeding population. This waste is often the first visual cue for gardeners to investigate.

Closer inspection of the foliage, especially on the underside, often reveals the larvae. When disturbed, they may exhibit a curling behavior, which is a common defensive posture for sawfly larvae.

Severe defoliation is a sign of an advanced infestation. In these cases, the tree may lose most of its leaves, leaving behind only the tough veins and stems, significantly weakening the plant.

Monitoring the trees during the early morning hours is most effective. During the heat of the day, larvae may seek shade, making them more difficult to detect without careful observation.

Prevention is the best strategy. Keeping the area beneath willow trees clean by removing leaf litter and debris helps destroy overwintering cocoons and disrupts the pest's cycle.

Tilling the soil beneath the canopy in the late autumn or early spring can expose hibernating larvae to environmental factors and natural predators, reducing the overwintering population.

For smaller trees, manual removal of larvae is effective. Checking the branches and picking off the larvae can keep populations at manageable levels without the need for chemical intervention.

Biological control methods, such as using preparations containing Bacillus thuringiensis, are highly effective against sawfly larvae while posing minimal risk to beneficial pollinators and other non-target insects.
