The guinea pig mange mite (Trixacarus caviae) is a microscopic parasitic mite belonging to the Sarcoptidae family. It is an obligate parasite, meaning it spends its entire life cycle on the host, burrowing into the skin to feed and reproduce.
Adult mites are small, globular, and off-white in color, measuring roughly 0.2-0.3 mm. Due to their minute size and burrowing habits, they are invisible to the naked eye and require microscopic examination for definitive identification.
The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. This cycle is completed in approximately 10 to 14 days, allowing the parasite to reproduce rapidly and infest the host significantly within a short timeframe.
Transmission occurs primarily through direct physical contact between animals. However, contaminated bedding, grooming tools, or environment can also act as temporary vehicles for spread in group-housing conditions.
Veterinary professionals diagnose the condition through deep skin scrapings, which are examined under a microscope to identify the presence of eggs, larvae, or adult mites.

General signs include lethargy, loss of appetite, and a dull, unkempt coat. In advanced cases, the extreme pain may trigger neurological symptoms like seizures or tremors.
