The spruce cone fly, scientifically known as Strobilomyia anthracina, is a member of the Anthomyiidae family. These flies are small, inconspicuous insects that primarily target the reproductive organs of spruce trees.
Adults are typically dark-colored, resembling common houseflies but smaller. They are rarely observed directly unless specifically looking for them during the spring flowering of their host trees.
The larvae are white, cylindrical, and legless. They possess specialized mouthparts for tunneling through the woody scales of spruce cones to reach the developing seeds.
Their life cycle is strictly dependent on the phenology of spruce trees. The timing of their emergence is perfectly synchronized with the availability of receptive female cones.
As a specialized seed predator, this insect is a significant subject of study in forest entomology, particularly regarding its economic impact on timber seed production.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the seeds within the spruce cones. They burrow through the cone scales, destroying the seed tissue as they consume it.
