The cone fly (genus Strobilomyia) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Anthomyiidae. These small flies are specialized insects that have evolved to live and reproduce within the cones of various coniferous trees.
Adult flies are typically greyish or dark in color, measuring about 5 to 7 millimeters in length, which allows them to easily navigate through the cone scales of their host trees.
The larvae are white or yellowish, maggot-like, and lack legs. They possess specialized mouthparts designed to feed on the inner tissues of the cone and the developing seeds.
The life cycle of the cone fly is strictly regulated by the phenology of the host conifers, ensuring that the emergence of adults coincides with the development of young cones.
Most species undergo a single generation per year, overwintering as pupae in the soil or forest litter beneath the canopy of the host trees.
What it damages
