How to identify

The Small cabbage fly (Egle parva) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Anthomyiidae. As its name suggests, it is smaller than the more common cabbage root fly, which makes it a challenging but significant pest for growers.

Adult flies are greyish in color, possessing a hairy body and clear, transparent wings. The head is relatively large with prominent eyes, which is typical for most members of the Anthomyiidae family.

The larvae are legless maggots, typically yellowish or white, measuring about 5-7 mm in length. Their body tapers towards the front end, allowing them to burrow into the roots of host plants effectively.

This pest overwinters as a pupa within a puparium in the soil, usually at a depth of 10-15 cm. This dormant stage allows the species to survive harsh winter conditions and emerge in the spring.

Accurate identification often requires professional entomological assessment, as the species can be easily mistaken for other similar-looking flies that inhabit the same agricultural environments.

What it damages

The primary hosts of Egle parva are cruciferous crops (Brassicaceae). This includes all types of cabbage, radish, turnip, and rutabaga, making it a threat to various vegetable production systems.

Damage is almost exclusively caused by the larvae, which feed on the roots and the base of the stems. By tunnelling into the root tissue, they disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering water and nutrient uptake.

Young plants, particularly seedlings, are the most susceptible to attack. Once the roots are severely compromised, the plant loses its stability in the soil and eventually wilts and dies.

In addition to direct structural damage, the feeding tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary infections like bacterial soft rot and various soil-borne fungal pathogens.

Under heavy infestation, entire fields of young seedlings can be destroyed within a few weeks, leading to significant economic losses for farmers and gardeners alike.

When it appears

The first emergence of adults usually occurs in early spring when soil temperatures reach 10-12 °C. This timing often coincides with the flowering period of certain early spring weeds and fruit trees.

Females lay their eggs in the soil near the base of the host plants. These eggs hatch within a short period, and the larvae immediately seek out roots to begin feeding, which is a critical stage for pest development.

The fly can produce several generations per season, depending on the climatic conditions of the region. Warmer and drier seasons often promote higher reproductive rates and faster development cycles.

Larvae go through several instars before pupating back in the soil. The duration of each generation varies, but development is usually rapid during the peak growing season.

As autumn approaches, the last generation pupates in the soil, entering diapause to survive the winter. This cycle ensures that the pest is ready to emerge as soon as conditions improve the following year.

Signs of infestation

The earliest symptom of infestation is the loss of turgor in the plants during the day, even if the soil moisture levels are adequate for normal plant growth.

Plants affected by the Small cabbage fly often exhibit chlorosis, where the leaves turn yellow along the margins. This happens because the root system is no longer able to support the plant's nutritional needs.

If you suspect an attack, carefully pulling on the plant will often reveal that it has lost most of its root system, making it easy to remove from the ground.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies, starting with cultural practices like deep ploughing in autumn, which exposes pupae to harsh weather and natural predators.

Using physical barriers such as floating row covers (agrofleece) can effectively prevent female flies from reaching the soil around the plants to lay their eggs during their peak activity.

Crop rotation is a fundamental practice in controlling this pest. Avoiding cruciferous crops on the same site for several years helps break the pest's lifecycle and reduces its overall population density.

In cases where infestations exceed the economic threshold, the application of targeted insecticides to the soil or the base of the plants can be employed to eliminate larvae before they cause widespread damage.

Maintaining high soil health and providing balanced nutrition can help plants better withstand minor feeding pressure, allowing them to regenerate root tissue more effectively if damaged.
