How to identify
The coriander seed wasp (Systole coriandri) is a small hymenopteran pest belonging to the Eurytomidae family. The adult wasp is approximately 1.8 to 2.2 mm in length with a distinct black body and clear wings.
The larvae are white, legless, and have a curved, C-shaped body with a well-developed head capsule and mandibles, adapted for burrowing and feeding inside the seed coat.
Adults are highly active during warm, sunny days. Females possess a specialized ovipositor which allows them to pierce the walls of young coriander fruits to deposit eggs inside the seed.
The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the coriander plant. Depending on the geographical region and climate, the wasp can complete one to two generations annually.
Overwintering occurs as mature larvae within the hollow seeds left in the field or in discarded plant debris, which allows the species to persist and emerge the following season.
What it damages
The primary target of the coriander seed wasp is the fruit (seed) of the coriander plant. Larvae consume the endosperm, leaving behind a hollowed-out seed shell.
This feeding behavior causes significant yield losses and reduces the quality of the essential oil content, which is crucial for the pharmaceutical and spice industries.
Infested seeds are rendered inviable, making them completely unsuitable for use as sowing material for the next season.
Economic damage can be severe, with reports of up to 50% yield loss in highly infested fields if no mitigation strategies are implemented during the critical fruit development phase.
Moreover, the damage caused by the larvae creates entry points for secondary fungal infections, which further degrades the quality of the harvested seeds during post-harvest storage.
When it appears
Adult emergence from overwintering sites typically coincides with the onset of the coriander flowering stage. This is the period when the wasps begin colonizing the fields.
The peak activity of females occurs during the transition from the flowering stage to the milk-ripe stage of seed development, as the soft fruit tissue is ideal for egg-laying.
If a second generation occurs, the adult emergence is synchronized with the development of seeds in late-sown crops, ensuring a continuous food supply for the developing larvae.
Weather conditions significantly impact population dynamics; high temperatures and low humidity accelerate the development cycle, potentially leading to higher pest pressure.
Monitoring should be conducted consistently from the first sign of flower buds, focusing on edge zones where pest concentration is often higher during the initial migration into the field.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the coriander seeds, through which the adult wasps escape after pupation.
Field scouting during the flowering period may reveal adults resting on the umbels. They are alert and easily disturbed, quickly taking flight when approached.
Dissecting seeds during the developmental stage reveals the presence of white larvae inside, which confirms the active infestation of the crop.
High levels of empty, light-weight seeds observed during the threshing process are a clear indicator of a high infestation level that has completed its development cycle.
Affected umbels may show symptoms of premature browning or drying, though this can sometimes be misidentified as environmental stress without proper inspection.
Control measures
Effective crop rotation is the most critical cultural control practice. Rotating coriander away from previously infested fields for at least three years helps break the pest's life cycle.
Deep autumn plowing (tillage) is recommended to bury crop residues, which helps in destroying the overwintering larvae residing within the discarded seeds in the soil.
