The Cypress gall midge (Resseliella odai) is a tiny dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family, known as a destructive pest for various coniferous species.
Adult insects are extremely small, mosquito-like flies reaching only 2-3 mm in length, which makes their direct detection in nature very challenging.
The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They are legless, yellowish or whitish, and reside in the cambium layer under the bark of branches or stems.
The insect’s biological cycle depends on the presence of suitable hosts, where the females lay eggs into small cracks or wounds in the plant bark.
Proper identification usually involves microscopic examination of the tissue or peeling back affected bark to reveal the larvae and their galleries.
What it damages
