The larvae are the destructive stage of this pest. They are small, legless, and typically cream-colored or light orange, living underneath the bark of spruce trees. Their presence is closely tied to the host's bark integrity and moisture levels.

Adult midges tend to lay eggs in existing cracks, wounds, or frost damage on the spruce bark. This behavior makes the insect a secondary pest that exploits already stressed or damaged wood tissue to gain entry.

The life cycle is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Warm, damp springs can accelerate larval development, potentially leading to higher infestation rates within a single growing season.

As a specialized pest, Resseliella ingrica primarily targets species of the Picea genus. Its life history is adapted to the physiology of spruce, making it a significant concern for managed conifer stands and ornamental gardens.

What it damages

The primary host for this gall midge is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). The larvae consume the cambium and phloem layers, creating winding galleries that interfere with the tree's nutrient transport system.

Severe infestations can lead to necrotic patches on the trunk, bark deformation, and eventually, the dieback of branches or the entire tree crown if the damage prevents proper nutrient flow for an extended period.

In forestry and nursery settings, this pest reduces the commercial and aesthetic value of the trees due to the formation of unsightly resin pockets and structural weaknesses in the trunk.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent sign of an infestation is the presence of dried or fresh resin streaks on the spruce trunk. These appear as yellowish or light-colored hardened patches where the midge larvae have penetrated the bark.

Careful inspection of these resin patches often reveals small, larvae-filled galleries. The bark in these areas might look slightly swollen or lifted due to the mechanical damage inflicted by the midge larvae.

Yellowing or premature browning of needles on specific branches is another indicator, suggesting that the nutrient supply to those branches has been disrupted by the larval activity on the trunk.

Visual observation during the spring and summer may reveal the subtle presence of adults, although they are rarely seen. Instead, the focus should remain on identifying fresh resin oozing on the bark during routine garden inspections.

Increased woodpecker activity on specific spruce trunks can serve as a biological indicator. Woodpeckers are often attracted to the larvae living under the bark and may focus their hunting efforts on heavily infested trees.

Control measures

The most effective strategy in forest management is the removal and destruction of heavily infested trees during sanitary logging operations to reduce the overall pest population.

In ornamental gardens, individuals can mechanically remove the resinous crust and dead bark. The wound should then be cleaned and treated with an appropriate fungicide or wound dressing to facilitate healing.

Chemical control focuses on the use of systemic insecticides, which are applied during the adult flight period to prevent egg-laying on the bark surfaces.

Good silvicultural and horticultural practices are vital. Ensuring proper soil nutrition and watering keeps the spruce trees healthy, allowing them to better resist or recover from minor infestations.
