The Papuan rhinoceros beetle (Papuana woodlarckiana) belongs to the Scarabaeidae family, within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by a robust body and a glossy black appearance, typical of the genus Papuana.
Males are easily identified by the presence of a distinct horn-like protrusion on the head, which serves as a weapon during competition for mating partners. Females are generally smaller and possess either a significantly reduced horn or no horn at all.
Adult insects measure between 20 and 35 millimeters in length. Their cuticle is extremely hard, allowing them to bore into the tough, fibrous tissues of palm trunks and shoots without incurring injury.
Larvae are typical C-shaped white grubs with brown head capsules and three pairs of thoracic legs. They dwell in moist, organic-rich soil or decomposing vegetation, progressing through several larval stages before pupation.
Pupation occurs in a specialized earthen cell constructed by the larva, providing a protected environment for the transition into an adult, ensuring survival until emergence.
What it damages
This beetle is a significant pest primarily affecting various palm species, including coconut and oil palms, as well as several aroid crops like taro. It is particularly destructive in tropical agricultural settings.
Adults inflict damage by boring into the soft, unexpanded meristematic tissue at the center of the palm. This process destroys the apical bud, which is the plant's main growth center, often resulting in the death of the entire palm.
While larvae primarily consume decaying organic matter, at high population densities they may feed on roots, causing stunted growth and increased susceptibility to environmental stress for the affected plants.

Signs of infestation
The most diagnostic sign of infestation is the appearance of triangular or V-shaped cuts on the leaves once they unfurl, which is the result of feeding damage inflicted while the leaf was still tightly curled in the crown.
Entry holes can often be found at the base of the crown or trunk, usually surrounded by coarse wood debris or "frass" ejected by the beetle during its tunneling process.
A yellowing or wilting of the spear leaf (the central unexpanded leaf) is a strong indicator that the beetle has successfully penetrated the apical meristem, necessitating immediate intervention.
