How to identify

The pear gall midge (Dasineura pyri) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family. Adult insects resemble tiny gnats and are rarely seen due to their minute size and nocturnal or crepuscular activity patterns.

The larval stage is the most destructive phase. The larvae are small, legless, and white or yellow in color. They reside protected within the folds of the pear leaves, feeding on the plant tissue throughout their development.

What it damages

The pear gall midge primarily infests pear trees. It targets the newly developing leaves at the growing points of shoots, causing the foliage to roll and deform significantly.

Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth of new shoots, reduced tree vigor, and poor development of the canopy. In nursery stock, this can cause significant economic losses by rendering trees stunted and unsalable.

When it appears

Adult midges emerge in spring, coinciding with the pear bud burst. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of young, unfolding leaves at the shoot tips.

The species may complete multiple generations per season, depending on local climatic conditions. Toward the end of the growing season, mature larvae descend to the soil under the tree canopy to overwinter in cocoons.

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive symptom of an infestation is the longitudinal rolling of leaf edges toward the midrib, forming a tube-like gall. These galls often turn black or red as they become necrotic.

  • Tight, longitudinal rolling of leaf margins.
  • Leaf tips turning necrotic or black.
  • Stunted terminal shoot growth.
  • Presence of tiny yellow larvae inside the rolled leaf tissue.

Control measures

Cultural control is a primary defense strategy. Pruning and destroying infested shoots early in the season can significantly reduce the pest population before the larvae have a chance to drop to the soil.

Soil cultivation under the tree canopy, particularly in late autumn or early spring, disrupts the life cycle by exposing overwintering cocoons to predators and harsh environmental conditions.

Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the emergence of adult midges or the early stages of larval development. Systemic or contact insecticides are generally effective if applied during the critical windows identified through pest monitoring.
