Furthermore, adult beetles attack the reproductive parts of the plant, including flowers and developing pods. This leads to flower abortion and malformed pods, directly impacting the final seed quality and quantity harvested by farmers.

Beyond physical damage, the beetles can act as vectors for various plant pathogens. By wounding the leaf tissues during feeding, they create entry points for bacteria and viruses, which can exacerbate the impact of the infestation on crop health.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. The primary cultural control method is a strict crop rotation schedule, which prevents the build-up of larval populations in the soil by removing their primary food source in successive seasons.

Seed treatment with systemic insecticides is a highly effective prophylactic measure. It protects the young roots from early larval stages, ensuring the crop can establish itself properly before the insect pressure increases in the field.

Field monitoring remains a cornerstone of control. Using yellow sticky traps or pheromone baits allows farmers to detect the arrival of the beetles early, facilitating timely interventions and preventing the spread across the entire field.

Sanitation practices, such as the removal of alternate weed hosts in the Fabaceae family, are necessary to reduce population carry-over. Keeping field margins clear of wild legumes deprives the pest of refuge areas, effectively lowering the overall infestation pressure.
