Vesiculariidae are a family of microscopic organisms that can exhibit pest-like behavior in specific agricultural conditions. Systematically, this family belongs to the phylum Bryozoa, class Gymnolaemata, order Ctenostomatida. Although most representatives live in marine environments, some species adapt to specific moist conditions where they interact with aquatic or semi-aquatic plant species.

These organisms most often affect crops grown in hydroponic systems, aquaponics, or waterlogged fields, including rice or ornamental water plants. They form colonial structures on the surface of roots and stems, which hinders normal gas exchange and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth and impaired physiological development of the host plant.
The biology of Vesiculariidae is based on a colonial lifestyle. Each individual (zooid) within a colony feeds by filtering water, capturing small organic particles. In intensive farming conditions, their life cycle accelerates when there is an excess of nutrients in the aquatic environment, which triggers rapid colonization on the root systems of the cultivated crops.
The nature of the damage manifests as the formation of a dense mucous or tough film on the plant organs. The primary harmful impact lies in the mechanical blocking of root access to dissolved nutrients and the creation of an environment conducive to secondary infections, such as rots caused by bacteria and fungi that inhabit the bryozoan colonies.
Protection measures include strict control of irrigation water quality and optimization of nutrient solution composition to prevent eutrophication. Effective methods include periodic flushing of irrigation systems and the use of biological agents capable of suppressing colony growth. In critical situations, mechanical cleaning of the root system and the use of approved algaecides, while strictly adhering to dosage guidelines, are recommended.
