Their colonies are highly organized, with nests often constructed underground or within wood, protected by specialized environmental controls created by the workers.
The damage caused by termites is typically internal. They bore into roots and stems, hollowing out the tissues and often replacing them with soil or excrement. This activity disrupts water and nutrient uptake, causing the plant to wither, lodge, or die. The hidden nature of the infestation makes early detection difficult.
Control measures must be integrated, combining cultural and chemical practices. Soil treatment with specific termiticides, the use of resistant crop varieties, and systematic removal of nest mounds are standard protocols. Proper field sanitation, such as removing infested plant debris, helps minimize the attraction of termite colonies to crops.
