The family Rajidae, commonly known as skates, belongs to the order Rajiformes. While they are a natural component of marine ecosystems, they are often perceived as problematic organisms in the context of aquaculture, as they can significantly interfere with the production of commercially valuable shellfish and crustaceans.

Their biology is marked by a slow growth rate and a unique reproductive strategy, where females lay eggs in tough, leathery cases often called mermaid's purses. These cases are secured to the seabed, providing protection during the long incubation period, which allows the species to maintain stable, persistent populations in specific maritime zones.
The economic impact of Rajidae on aquaculture is primarily due to their predatory habits. Skates are bottom-feeders that forage on crustaceans and mollusks. When these fish congregate near shellfish farms, they can consume a large proportion of the stock, leading to substantial biomass loss and reduced harvest efficiency for the farmers.
Beyond direct consumption, the physical presence of skates can lead to damage to submerged structures. Their scavenging and digging behavior along the sea floor can compromise the integrity of protective netting and cultivation cages, creating openings that may allow other predators to enter or lead to the escape of the farmed products.
