The family Procaviidae, commonly known as hyraxes, comprises small, herbivorous mammals that belong to the order Hyracoidea. Despite their appearance, which resembles rodents, they are biologically unique and have specialized teeth and digestive systems that allow them to process a wide range of plant materials. Hyraxes are known to cause significant damage to various agricultural crops. They are opportunistic feeders that consume a diverse diet including cereals, legumes, leafy vegetables, and the bark of young fruit trees. When agricultural fields are located near their rocky habitats, these animals can migrate to the crops, causing widespread devastation to the planting areas.

Regarding their biology, hyraxes have a gestation period that is relatively long for their size, resulting in well-developed offspring. They live in large, structured colonies that maintain territory. Their daytime activity allows them to exploit food resources efficiently, and they often become a persistent nuisance for farmers as they habituate to the presence of human-managed crops nearby.

The damage caused by hyraxes is characterized by aggressive grazing. They target the most succulent parts of the plant, including stems, leaves, and seedlings. This feeding behavior stunts plant growth and significantly reduces crop yield. In orchards, they can kill young saplings by stripping the bark, which prevents nutrient transport and causes the tree to wither and die.

Effective control measures focus on physical exclusion and habitat management. Installing high-quality fencing is the most reliable method for keeping them away from valuable crops. Additionally, farmers may employ the following strategies:
