The family Planariidae belongs to the phylum Platyhelminthes, class Turbellaria, order Tricladida. While most planarians are free-living organisms found in freshwater, certain species have adapted to moist soil environments, where they can act as opportunistic pests by damaging the roots and tissues of cultivated plants.

Planarians

These pests primarily target plants grown in greenhouses, nursery stock, and container plants kept in conditions of excessive moisture. Crops with dense root systems or those grown in media rich in organic matter are at the highest risk, as these environments provide the ideal conditions for planarian movement and reproduction.

The biology of soil-dwelling planarians is characterized by their remarkable ability to survive in moist substrates and their complex reproductive strategies. Being hermaphroditic, they can quickly colonize a new area, and their high capacity for tissue regeneration makes them difficult to eradicate once a population is established in a plant container or greenhouse bench.

The damage caused by planarians is twofold: they physically consume root tissues and root hairs, and they act as vectors for secondary pathogens. By damaging the integrity of the root surface, they facilitate the entry of fungi and bacteria that lead to root rot. Infested plants show stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and eventually wilting due to the loss of functional roots.

Effective management strategies focus on modifying the growing environment. To control infestations, growers should:

  • Improve drainage to prevent waterlogged conditions.
  • Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Use sterile potting media to prevent the introduction of the pest.
  • Apply specialized nematicidal treatments or biological controls if the infestation becomes severe.
