Systematically, the family Petauridae consists of arboreal marsupials adapted for gliding. Their biology revolves around a high-energy diet. They rely heavily on plant exudates such as sap, gum, and nectar, which leads them to interact directly with agricultural plants in ways that often result in crop loss.
The primary crops affected by these gliders include various fruit-bearing trees. They are particularly attracted to orchard crops like peaches, apples, pears, and grapes. Their feeding habits are not limited to ripe fruit; they also extensively damage the structural integrity of the trees by feeding on tree sap and stripping bark.
The damage caused is multifaceted. By stripping bark to access sap, they create entry points for various pathogens, leading to tree stress, branch dieback, or fungal infections. When feeding on fruits, they consume parts of the flesh and leave behind wounded, unmarketable produce that is susceptible to rapid decay and secondary insect infestations.
Management strategies focus on exclusion and modification of the habitat. Installing smooth, slippery metal bands or collars around the trunks of valuable trees is a highly effective mechanical barrier against climbing. Furthermore, using fine-mesh netting during the fruit ripening stage remains the most reliable method to physically protect the yield from nocturnal wildlife activity.
